League of Legends 2020 World Championship Finals Preview

League of Legends 2020 World Championship Finals Preview

For the first time since 2017, a Korean team has a chance to lift the Summoners’ Cup. DAMWON Gaming was the best LCK team over the second half of the year. This team finally put it all together after showcasing their potential at last year’s World Championships, and now they can become just the third Korean organization to win at Worlds. Suning are the only team standing in their way, and they are out to become the third straight Chinese side to win Worlds.

2020 League of Legends World Championship Finals Odds

DAMWON Gaming -279

Suning +218

This is a familiar spot for Suning. They are underdogs coming into the finals, but they have flourished in this role throughout Worlds. Suning were seen as the second-best team behind G2 Esports in the Group Stage, but they topped the Kings of Europe in order to grab the top spot out of the group. They followed that up with an upset victory of 2020 LPL Spring Split champions JD Gaming in the quarterfinals before stopping pre-tournament favorite Top Esports in the semifinals last week. A win over DAMWON Gaming would give them wins over all three semifinalists and victories over the domestic champions of the top three regions in the world, leaving no doubt they are more than worthy titleholders.

DAMWON Gaming are likely to be Suning’s toughest test yet though. They are bigger underdogs to DAMWON than they were against G2, JDG, or TES, and it’s not hard to see why when you look at what DAMWON has done at this year’s Worlds.

Junglers are key in this meta, and Canyon has come up big time and time again for DAMWON. He currently has the best KDA at Worlds, boasting an 8.1 KDA per Games of Legends through 13 games at this tournament. You might think that he is over reliant on Graves with nine of his 13 games on the champion, but his Kindred and Nidalee are even better than his Graves and he proved he can play Hecarim too.

Suning do have a jungler that can go toe to toe with Canyon in SofM. He was the best jungler in China this year, and the team has played around him in order to reach its full potential. SofM is a hard farming jungler, but he has also proven he can set up ganks to get his lanes ahead if the situation calls for it.

The main challenge for Suning will be in the mid lane and top lane. Angel has looked good so far at Worlds, but ShowMaker has been elite. ShowMaker has a 7.2 KDA and has thrived on carry picks like Twisted Fate and Syndra.

Top lane is a bigger issue as Bin has not proven he can effectively play a tank in the top lane, limiting Suning’s team comp options. That’s been fine in most series, but now he has to go up against the most talented top laner in the world in Nuguri. Nuguri has proven he can effectively play tanks as well as carries, and that gives DAMWON a lot of flexibility for this series.

The underdogs do probably have an advantage in the bottom lane with the legendary SwordArt paired with rising star Huanfeng, but Ghost and BeryL have played very well together.

This is probably Suning’s No. 1 win condition, so it’s likely that you’ll see them play around Huanfeng in the hopes that he can get ahead in the late game.

This line has already moved in favor of DAMWON, and that is the right play. They are essentially even money at -1.5, so that’s the best bet.
