2020 KeSPA Cup Betting Preview

2020 KeSPA Cup Betting

The sixth KeSPA Cup will take place from December 21, 2020 to January 2, 2021 in Seoul, South Korea. All ten LCK teams will participate, but unlike previous years, there will be no CK or amateur teams in this tournament. Unfortunately, that means we will miss out on seeing undiscovered raw talent, but this will be the first look we get as the top ten teams’ new rosters. No team has won this competition multiple times during its short history, but no team that has won Worlds has won the KeSPA Cup either. Teams like Griffin, KT Rolster, and ROX Tigers came close, but they weren’t able to break that streak.

Tournament favorites T1 have won three World Championships, but they have never won the KeSPA Cup. They don’t have Faker and Teddy currently listed on the roster for this event, so there would be a noticeable shift in the League of Legends betting odds if T1’s best mid laner and bottom laner didn’t participate in this event.

T1 disappointed mightily last year. This proud organization missed out on Worlds for the second time in its history, but the roster didn’t receive the overhaul you might expect. Keria was signed to replace Effort at support and Zeus was added but no other player moves were made.

However, there are questions about the overall structure at T1. They were reportedly close to naming LS as their new head coach, but a fan backlash scrapped that plan and led to Daeny and Zefa being added instead. That makes T1 a tough sell at this price.

It’s clear that DAMWON Gaming are the best bet on the board. The decision to list the reigning World Champions as the second favorite is a head scratcher considering the only person from that team that we know won’t be taking part in this event is top laner Nuguri. Nuguri was clearly the best top laner in Korea last year, but DAMWON signed Chasy and Khan to replace him.

Khan has been considered one of the best top laners in the world for the last few years, but he has yet to find a lot of team success. It will be interesting to see if the resource-heavy top laner changes his play style with this team as we saw Nuguri do in order to make DAMWON the best team in the world.

Gen.G were one of the three teams to make it to Worlds from Korea last year, so it makes sense to see them among the favorites. They brought back all of last year’s team, and that continuity will do them well in a tournament like this one even if Flawless starts ahead of Clid in the jungle.

One of the most intriguing teams this offseason was Afreeca Freecs. They kept Kiin, Dread, and Fly in their same positions, but they switched up their bottom lane with the addition of Bang and Lehends. Bang has been an underwhelming AD Carry in North America since leaving T1 following the 2018 season, while Lehends is one of the best playmaking supports in the region.

DRX were the second-best team in the LCK last year, but they have the second-worst odds to win the 2020 KeSPA Cup. This is a very different team though as Doran, Chovy, Deft, and Keria all left in the offseason, leaving only jungler Pyosik remaining from the 2020 roster.
