2018 LOL World Championships Odds

The 14th annual BlizzCon will be the site of the Overwatch World Cup Finals. Teams from eight different countries will duke it out to see who is the best in the world in Anaheim this weekend. This is the third Overwatch World Cup, and South Korea has won each of the previous two events. In 2016, the Koreans didn’t drop a single map on the way to the title, but they were a bit more vulnerable last year. Korea dropped at least one map in all three of their knockout round series in 2017.

2018 Overwatch World Cup Betting Odds

South Korea -260 France +2000
United States +450 China +4000
Canada +1450 United Kingdom +5500
Finland +1500 Australia +6500

There were originally 24 teams vying for a spot at the Overwatch World Cup Finals. South Korea and Finland qualified from Group A as Russia was left at home in a bit of a surprise. However, Finland nearly knocked off Korea to grab the top spot in the group, and they are a longshot to watch.

In Group B, it was all about the US and Canada, and the US team dropped just two maps on their way to the top spot in the group.

Group C saw China post a 5-0 record, but the Chinese were not as strong as you might think. They were taken to a decisive fifth game by fellow qualifiers Australia and both Denmark and Thailand nearly knocked them off too.

The final group saw France and the United Kingdom emerge as qualifiers. France swept four of the five teams in Group D, with Germany being the only team to win a map from them.

The Favorite

There’s a reason that the country most represented in the inaugural season of the Overwatch League was Korea. Korea has a plethora of talent at every position, and they are the favorites until someone beats them. NYXL’s JJoNak and Seoul Dynasty’s Fleta are the team’s leaders, and they have gelled well over the past couple months. JJoNak was named Overwatch League MVP this season for his incredible job in support, while Fleta is one of the best DPS players in the world.

The No. 1 Contender

You might not think of the United States as a great country for Overwatch, but this is clearly the second-best team in the competition. There aren’t a lot of big names on the roster, yet the tank play has been superb and that has made them Korea’s biggest threat. SPACE and Muma have been strong up front, and Sinatraa is showing why the San Francisco Shock made him one of the highest paid players in the Overwatch League.

Longshots with a real shot

Finland leads this list after taking Korea to five games during qualification. The Finns are known for their great DPS play, and players like Taimou and LiNKzr need no introduction. The support combination of BigGoose and Shaz has been big for the team too, as both players played together all season long on the Los Angeles Gladiators. Having chemistry with supports is more important than it is with other positions, and that gives Finland a chance.
Although Canada would be the logical next team to pick given the Overwatch betting odds above, I like China’s chances more at this price. People are down on China after the disappointment that was the Shanghai Dragons, but China is a strong region for Overwatch. This team has a chip on its shoulder, and if they knock off Finland, they will have a winnable match against either France or Canada.
