2018 League of Legends World Championships Quarterfinals Day 1 Preview

The two favorites to win the 2018 League of Legends World Championship are KT Rolster and Royal Never Give Up. The Korean and Chinese champions have largely looked like the two best teams in the world this season, but they both had a bit of a hiccup during the Group Stage. KT Rolster were dominant through the first round robin, yet a loss to Edward Gaming nearly led to the team needing a tiebreaker to grab the top spot in the group. Meanwhile, Royal Never Give Up surprisingly dropped two games in the Group Stage, and they were forced into a tiebreaker with Cloud9 in order to ensure they finished first in the group.

Unfortunately, both teams were drawn together on the same side of the bracket, so one of the favorites to win the tournament won’t be able to make it to the World Championship Finals. Everyone is assuming they will meet in one of the two semifinals, but Invictus Gaming and G2 Esports will be out to play spoiler.

2018 League of Legends World Championships Quarterfinals Day 1 Betting Odds

KT Rolster -315

Invictus Gaming +250

You have to be a little bummed if you’re a KT Rolster fan. Any of the other three second-place teams would have been a much easier draw, but instead KT were given Invictus Gaming. Invictus Gaming were the most dominant regular season team in the world this year. They ruled the LPL with an iron fist, amassing an incredible 36-2 record against their Chinese counterparts.

However, they were unable to claim any titles as Royal Never Give Up bested them for both split championships and kept them out of the Mid-Season Invitational. They were a hefty favorite per the Esports betting odds to win Group D over Fnatic, but they again came up short on the final day, losing to Fnatic twice to force this match-up.

Invictus have amassed one of the best rosters in the world. Rookie is considered by many to be the best mid laner at Worlds, and TheShy is one of the strongest top laners there is in a 1v1. JackeyLove is being hyped as the next Uzi at the age of 17, and that has led to this team continually looking to push lanes.

Where they have struggled is in team fights when the pressure is on. Fnatic turned their aggression against them last week, and KT will look to do the same here. KT used to have many of the same problems as Invictus with their talented roster, but they have become better team fighters this year. That will give them the edge in this series.

Royal Never Give Up -1292

G2 Esports +696

They say anything can happen in sports, but it’s a pretty big stretch to see G2 advancing over Royal Never Give Up. G2 were an inconsistent team all throughout the year. Mid laner Perkz was the only player that was solid day in and day out, and he will be the one they lean on here.

Royal Never Give Up boast the world’s best player in Uzi. He has taken his game to rarified air this year, and he is constantly outplaying foes by a considerable margin. Uzi can take over a game on a number of champions, and Hjarnan will have a hard time stopping him.

G2’s Hjarnan has only looked great on Heimerdinger this year, and he has struggled on every other AD Carry pick. If he takes Jhin or Kai’Sa into lane, he will need constant support from Jankos to avoid getting snowballed, and that will allow Karsa to pull off ganks in different parts of the map. There’s just no good option for G2 in this one, and they will be fortunate to win a game.
