2018 League of Legends World Championships Quarterfinals Day 2 Preview

If you’re a fan of Fnatic or Cloud9, Wednesday’s Quarterfinals draw worked out as well as possible for you. The best team in Europe and the only team left from North America each got put in a much easier bracket than expected, and there is a lot of optimism that a Western team could reach the League of Legends World Championships Finals for the first time since 2011. Both teams have winnable matches, and the three most talented teams at the tournament are all on the other side of the bracket.

2018 League of Legends World Championships Quarterfinals Day 2 Betting Odds

Afreeca Freecs -375

Cloud9 +290

The Afreeca Freecs were one of the best teams in Korea all year long. They didn’t win a split title in either Spring or Summer, but their second- and third-place finishes led to them qualifying for Worlds.

Afreeca were the first Korean team to move to a 10-player roster, and their internal scrims helped fuel their success. They were arguably the most imaginative team in Korea all year long considering some of their drafts, and they certainly have a surprise pick or two up their sleeve to spring on Cloud9.

Mid laner Kuro was one of the best in Korea for most of the season. He shined on picks like Swain, Vel’Koz, and LeBlanc, and he was a solid utility player for this team. Top laner Kiin was one of the two or three best players at his position in the world all year, and Tusin was largely very good as the team’s support, especially when he was on Alistar.

Interestingly enough, they will be facing sort of a carbon copy version of themselves in Cloud9. Cloud9 have the best top laner in North America in Licorice, a mid laner that has taken a step back from being an assassin to embrace more of a team role in Jensen, and a playmaking support in Zeyzal.

Like Afreeca, Cloud9 are known for their innovative drafts too, and they were the first to break out a number of picks in competitive play. Hecarim, Evelynn, Zilean, and Quinn were all first played by C9 this year, and it’s very possible that Hecarim, Zilean, and Quinn are used here.

This is going to be the most competitive series of the Quarterfinals. I think Cloud9 have a real decent chance to pull off the upset as both teams will try to outsmart the other in the draft phase.

Fnatic -170

Edward Gaming +140

This is the most dangerous Fnatic have looked on the international stage since 2011. Fnatic have had a fantastic season, and the ability to keep together four of their five members from last year really paid off. AD Carry Rekkles has been playing well, but the reason the team has shined and claimed a No. 1 seed after the Group Stage was mid laner Caps. Caps has played out of his mind this year on a number of champions, and his ability to win 1v1s and complement his team has helped Fnatic take the next step.

However, Edward Gaming are the shortest favorite on the board in the Quarterfinals. They have a talented mid laner in Scout that has the potential to keep Caps in check, and they have a roster with a plethora of international experience.

Inconsistency has been the buzzword for EDG this year as you never know what team you will see from week to week. The bottom lane and jungle position have especially had issues putting up steady performances, and that led to a second-place finish after a loss to Team Liquid.

At this price, I like Fnatic considering their overall level of play, but if the line crept up 30 or 40 cents higher, I would consider a play on EDG.
