2018 LOL World Championships

The League of Legends World Championships are set to get underway in Korea this Wednesday, and 16 teams will be duking it out to see which one is the best in the world. Coming into the competition, the three teams from Korea and the three teams from China are the favorites to win it all, with the remaining 10 teams far behind in terms of their odds to claim the Summoner’s Cup. A Korean team has won each of the last five World Championships, but China has dominated the international scene this year and they look poised to have a team grab the region’s first title.

2018 League of Legends World Championships Group A and Group B Betting Odds

LoL World Championship Group A Betting Odds

Afreeca Freecs -225

G2 +900

Flash Wolves +275

Phong Vu Buffalo +2500

While I expect Phong Vu Buffalo to give a team or two problems because of their early game aggression, they are longshots to win this group for a reason. They just don’t have the guns to stick with Afreeca Freecs or Flash Wolves, and they are very unlikely to make the knockout rounds.

Some may believe in G2’s chances, but I sure don’t. G2 have been underwhelming this season, and I don’t have much faith in anyone other than mid laner Perkz and maybe top laner Wunder. The bottom lane has not been great, no matter what Hjarnan’s KDA says, and that will submarine their chances.

That leaves Afreeca and Flash Wolves. Afreeca are making their first trip to Worlds after their most successful season since they were founded in 2015. They played well in both playoff splits, and they have two great players in top laner Kiin and mid laner Kuro. Their difference maker is Tusin though. Tusin was one of the better support players in the world early on this year, but his play dipped considerably over the latter half of the year.

That’s why I’ll be backing Flash Wolves at this price. I’m struggling to come up with a reason why Flash Wolves are this big of an underdog considering their success on the international stage this year. They have a great mid laner in Maple and one of the best bottom lanes around in SwordArt and Betty. They have defeated Royal Never Give Up twice and Kingzone DragonX four times this year.

LoL World Championship Group B Betting Odds

Royal Never Give Up -188

Cloud9 +6000

Gen.G +137

Team Vitality +10000

Apologies in advance to Cloud9 and Team Vitality. Hopefully, those two teams enjoy their stay in Korea, because they won’t make it to the knockout rounds in this group.

The best team in the world this year has been Royal Never Give Up. RNG have won all four competitions they have been a part of in 2018, claiming two split titles, the Mid-Season Invitational, and they won the deciding match that gave China the win over Korea at Rift Rivals. Uzi has staked his claim to be considered the best player in the world with his masterful performances, but the entire team has been on point throughout the season.

They will be taking on the reigning champions in this group though. Gen.G won the 2017 World Championship under the name Samsung Galaxy, and all six players are back to defend their crown. This team won the title on the back of its expert teamfighting in 2017, and they are likely to follow that model again.
