2018 League of Legends World Championships

The League of Legends World Championships are set to get underway in Korea this Wednesday, and 16 teams will be duking it out to see which one is the best in the world. Coming into the competition, the three teams from Korea and the three teams from China are the favorites to win it all, with the remaining 10 teams far behind in terms of their odds to claim the Summoner’s Cup. A Korean team has won each of the last five World Championships, but China has dominated the international scene this year and they look poised to have a team grab the region’s first title.

2018 League of Legends World Championships Group C and Group D Betting Odds

LoL World Championship Group C Betting Odds

KT Rolster -450

Edward Gaming +550

Team Liquid +800

MAD Team +10000

KT Rolster look like one of the best teams in the world, and that’s usually right when KT let you down. This team was one of the first superteams in League of Legends, but they were unable to make it to Worlds in 2016 or 2017. They played well during the regular season, but then tanked in the playoffs missing out on a chance to prove themselves on the world stage.

This season they erased a lot of those past failures in one fell swoop. They finished in third-place during the Spring Split, but they roared back during the Summer Split and finished top of the table in the regular season and followed that up with a win over Griffin in the Summer Split Finals to give them their long-awaited domestic title.

All five starters are considered to be among the best at their positions. Smeb is one of the best top laners in the world, and many are calling veteran Score the best jungler at Worlds with Peanut out of the mix. Ucal has come on strong as the fresh face in the lineup, while Deft and Mata have been solid in the bottom lane.

I’ve spent the last three paragraphs trying to talk myself into KT Rolster, but I just can’t do it at this price. If they were -250 or lower, I could probably pull the trigger. However, these odds are just too steep for a team that is named after its rollercoaster playstyle.

Instead, I’m going to go with Edward Gaming. There are a lot of people that are down on EDG, and with good reason, but the talent is there. Scout can take over a game with his play in the mid lane, and the jungler combination of Haro and Clearlove can push lanes ahead. They have a reputation of failing to show up when it matters most too, but at this price I’ll take my chances.

Invictus Gaming -500

Fnatic +350

G-Rex +4000

100 Thieves +5000

Invictus are the most intriguing team coming into Worlds. They were the best team in China during both regular season splits, racking up a combined mark of 36-2. However, they were unable to get past Royal Never Give Up in the postseason on either occasion, losing heartbreaking playoff series by a margin of 3-2 in both splits.

They have two players that some consider to be the best in the world at their respective positions. Rookie has been incredible in the mid lane this year, and he has carried this team on multiple occasions. He has made unique picks like Jayce work, and he has shown his utility side with five games of Lulu and nine games of Orianna this year. He can be a table setter or a playmaker depending on what his team needs, and that will come in handy.

TheShy is seen by some as the best top laner in the world. A hand injury kept him out of the Spring Split Playoffs, and may have cost Invictus the title, but he is ready to prove himself now. He is incredibly gifted with his movements, and he will look to push.

The big concern for Invictus is the bottom lane. JackeyLove has a lot of potential, but the youngster is still developing. He looked overmatched by Uzi often during the playoff losses, and he has to erase those doubts from his mind.

Despite the emergence of Caps as a talented mid laner, I’m out on Fnatic. The team was the best in Europe, but this group is a significant step up from the EU. Fnatic didn’t impress with their performances at the last Worlds or at the Mid-Season Invitational, so I can’t back them as a short underdog.

Instead, my play for this group is on G-Rex. I do think Invictus wins the group, but these odds on G-Rex are too good to pass up. The team looked great during the Play-In Stage, and Taiwan teams have been routinely underestimated on this stage, so 40-1 is excellent value.
