Southeast Division Odds Analysis

The Heat went 39-43 a season ago and failed to qualify for the playoffs, but the oddsmakers see improvement on the horizon. The signing of Butler adds to a group that already included talented guard Goran Dragic as well as Justise Winslow. There are also pervasive rumors that Miami is looking to acquire veteran point guard Chris Paul in a trade with the Thunder. If that happens, it should increase Miami’s chances at winning the Southeast Division, so keep a close eye on those rumors.

The Orlando Magic won the Southeast Division a year ago after finishing 42-40. They made it to the postseason before falling in the first round and will aim to build on that. Nikola Vucevic is going to lead the way once again, and there are some nice players around him, including Aaron Gordon, D.J. Augustin, Jonathan Isaac and Evan Fournier. The Magic are hoping that former No. 1 overall pick Markelle Fultz experiences a career rebirth in Orlando. He never got on track with the 76ers but is still young and can really help this team if he can get past his shooting form woes. The Magic doesn’t have the name recognition of some others but should be a solid team.

The Atlanta Hawks are the only other team that seems to have a puncher’s chance at winning the division. Point guard Trae Young looked really good down the stretch last year as a rookie and there are some decent players around him. Atlanta still seems like it is a couple of years away from true contention, so Young would have to explode and become a true superstar for this team to overtake Miami and Orlando.

The Washington Wizards have been in the running in the past but are expected to be bad in 2019-20. Bradley Beal is still around and should have a nice season, but running mate John Wall is dealing with an injury that is expected to keep him out all year. The Wizards may decide to trade off their useful parts if the wins don’t come, as expected.

The worst team in the division is expected to be the Charlotte Hornets. They were decent last season but let star point guard Kemba Walker walk in free agency, which signaled a complete rebuild. The Hornets probably made the right call because they were stuck in no man’s land, but it is going to hurt quite a bit in 2019-20.

In all likelihood, the Southeast Division is going to come down to one of two teams, but the wrong one is favored. Even if the Heat get Paul, they won’t be as good as the Magic. Don’t be distracted by a team in a smaller market without too many big names. Orlando is the pick to repeat as the division winner.

NBA Pick: Orlando Magic to win the Southeast Division as the +178 underdogs
