The TCU Horned Frogs ripped through their non-conference schedule to start the season. TCU reeled off 12 straight wins, crushing almost every opponent its path before its first Big 12 game. That’s when things started to change. TCU has not been able to get any sort of traction against conference foes. The Horned Frogs have lost four of their six conference games and their two wins have come against teams with losing records. They are in desperate need of a win when the West Virginia Mountaineers come to town....
After making it to the Final Four last season, the South Carolina Gamecocks looked like they were on their way to a disappointing follow-up campaign. They lost three of their first four conference games, and they looked like they might finish at the bottom of the SEC East....
Supremacy in the SEC East will be on the line Saturday night when the Florida Gators travel to take on the Kentucky Wildcats. Kentucky has already fallen to two SEC East rivals this season and has looked much more vulnerable than in season’s past. The streaky Gators are riding high again after a dominating win over Arkansas on Wednesday night, and they are looking to grab another road victory. If they win, they will be two games up on Kentucky....
Just three weeks into the Pac-12 season, every team has at least one loss and the race appears to be wide open. The Oregon Ducks have gotten off to slow start and certainly can’t afford to lose many more games if they want to stay close to Arizona. They’ve had success recently against the UCLA Bruins, winning three straight in Eugene and they look to extend that streak on Saturday night. UCLA is looking to rebound after what Steve Alford called his team’s poorest outing all season in a loss last week to Colorado....
A narrow win over Texas and a lost to Texas Tech at the start of Big 12 play had many questioning the legitimacy of the Kansas Jayhawks. But don’t doubt KU any longer, especially after a thrilling come-from-behind win on the road against a good West Virginia club. That might be the game that turns things around for Bill Self and his club, leading them to a record 14th straight conference title. There’s still plenty of basketball to be played and the Baylor Bears are no pushover....
An unexpected battle for first-place in the Pac-12 takes place Saturday afternoon when the Arizona Wildcats visit the Stanford Cardinal. The Cats are in their usual spot at the top of the standings, but the Cardinal have surprised with a fast start that has them locked in a duel with UA. Not many thought Stanford was in a position to be in first place at any point during the year after going just 6-7 in their non-conference slate, but the start of league play means everything....
The Duke Blue Devils already have two losses in ACC play, and can’t afford many more in the ultra-competitive conference. They shouldn’t have to worry about that on Saturday when they host the reeling Pittsburgh Panthers....
The Missouri Tigers seem like a possible bubble team for the NCAA Tournament at this point, and would love to improve their status with some key wins down the stretch. A big opportunity arises this week as they hit the road to face off against the Texas A-M Aggies....
Things have not gone well lately for the Florida State Seminoles. Florida State looked like it could make some noise in the ACC during non-conference play, but the Seminoles have cooled off over the past few weeks. The Noles are sitting at just 2-4 in conference play and have yet to win an ACC road game. They are hoping that they can break that streak when they travel north to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies in a Saturday matinee game....
Turnovers and defense will be on the agenda when the Texas Longhorns travel to take on the West Virginia Mountaineers this weekend. Both of these teams are known for their defensive prowess and both sides thrive off of forcing mistakes out of their opponent....
For the second time this season, we will see Bedlam on the court when the Oklahoma Sooners travel to take on the Oklahoma State Cowboys this weekend. Oklahoma State has not had an easy go of it thus far in conference play, losing four of its first six Big 12 tilts. It hasn’t been all roses for the Sooners either. Oklahoma has lost some of its luster and lost by double digits in each of its last two road games. Perhaps staying in-state will hope the Sooners regain their form....
The top of the Big East is loaded and two of the best in the league square off in a top-25 battle when the No. 19 Seton Hall Pirates host the No. 11 Xavier Musketeers. Both teams are trying to stick near the top of the standings and holding on to the hope of catching No. 1 Villanova, so this matchup takes on a little extra in that regard. Winning at home is crucial in this conference and the Pirates have yet to taste defeat on their home floor, but they will be tested against the scrappy Musketeers....
The unranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have been a pleasant surprise at the start of the ACC season, posting a 3-1 league record and sitting ahead of behemoths Duke, Clemson, Miami and Notre Dame. The Jackets also opened with a better record than the North Carolina Tar Heels, but they’ll have the difficult task of winning in the Dean Dome as they try to put some distance between themselves and the Heels....
The VIllanova Wildcats are making their claim as the best team in college basketball this season. They will aim to continue flexing their muscle when they face off against the Connecticut Huskies in a non-conference matchup this week....
The Michigan State Spartans have not looked good over their last few outings. Michigan State was seen as a potential Final Four team just a few weeks ago and many considered Tom Izzo’s squad the favorite to win the Big Ten. However, the Spartans have collapsed over their last three games and are looking increasingly vulnerable. We’ll see whether or not they can bounce back when they take on the Indiana Hoosiers this week. Indiana would love to get a win over the Spartans on the road. That would really boost its resume....
The St. Bonaventure Bonnies are looking to make the NCAA Tournament for just the second time in the last 17 years. St. Bonaventure has not been a traditional basketball power, but this year’s team has been surprisingly good. The Bonnies turned some heads after beating Maryland, and then they turned a lot more by knocking off Syracuse on the road. Now, they will take on one of the traditional small school....
The Gonzaga Bulldogs have gotten national recognition for their dominant showing in college basketball this season, as they are in the top-25. The Saint Mary’s Gaels could get there with a road win over Gonzaga this week....
The Big Ten has some of the better teams in the country, and the Purdue Boilermakers are making their case as the best in the conference. Purdue has shot to top-five in the country and is looking like a national title contender. The Boilermakers will remain to stay undefeated in Big Ten play when they host the Wisconsin Badgers....
Conference play has not gone well for the Georgetown Hoyas. Georgetown won eight straight games to start the season, but the team had played a bunch of bad opponents and had yet to be really tested....
A promising start to the season has recently gone awry for the Arkansas Razorbacks. They started the year 11-2 and looked like they might be one of the teams to beat in the SEC after knocking off Oklahoma and Minnesota in non-conference play....
The Kentucky Wildcats are not the steamroller we expected them to be. Kentucky has not looked too impressive thus far in SEC play. The Wildcats lost by double digits to Tennessee and have yet to beat anyone in conference by more than seven points....
For the first time in over a decade, the Kansas Jayhawks are not the favorites to win the Big 12. Kansas has looked vulnerable this season and has not looked convincing in any conference game yet this year. The Jayhawks might be 3-1 in conference, but those wins came by four, five, and six points....
Winning on the road has been one of the few problems for the Duke Blue Devils this season. Duke’s only two losses came on the road against marginal ACC opponents in Boston College and NC State. The Blue Devils wanted to prove that they could win on the road and hammered Pittsburgh in the Steel City earlier in the week....
The Northwestern Wildcats made history by making the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history last week. Northwestern was looking to get back to the Big Dance and make it a trend this year. However, it’s been tough sledding for the team thus far....
All of a sudden, everything is going right again for the Florida Gators. Florida was one of the most talked about teams through the first month of the season, but had an awful two-week stretch after it got back from Portland. The Gators dropped games against Florida State, Loyola-Illinois, and Clemson, despite being at least a -200 moneyline favorite in each game....
