New York Yankees at St. Louis Cardinals MLB Betting

For teams that have been around for what seems like forever, the New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals will be meeting for just the 14th time during the regular season when they hook up on Saturday on FOX. Of course being in opposite league’s limits the opportunities, so this is a unique matchup between storied franchises. Once threatening the MLB record for wins in a season the Yankees have cooled off losing eight of their first 14 games since the All-Star break. They no longer have the best record in MLB following Wednesday’s loss to Seattle, but they remain tops in the AL with a double-digit lead in the AL East.

First pitch for this interleague contest between the New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals is set for 7:15 p.m. ET on Saturday, August 6, 2022. The game will air live on FOX from Busch Stadium. BookMaker.eu will have betting options for every game of the MLB season.

Odds Analysis

Don’t feel sorry for the Yankees. Despite their recent funk they were the first team to win 70 games and sport a nifty .660 winning percentage, still tops in the AL. And they are the favorite this week in the futures market to win the World Series. While they didn’t make major moves at the deadline, the Yankees appear to be better with the moves they did make. Much needed bullpen help arrived in the form of Lou Trivino and Scott Effross to offset some injury issues and getting rid of Joey Gallo was a plus.

The Yankees are too strong all around to have a major collapse so the division lead is something they’ll hold onto. And there’s a reason why only two clubs won 116 games in a season: it’s just hard to do. Injuries have played a role with the pitching staff and Giancarlo Stanton, who is likely to miss a few more games. The Yankees head to St. Louis after dropping the final two games to Seattle and they are just 6-8 since the break. During that stretch they’ve still been able to score plating five or more runs eight times with the OVER 9-4-1.

The Cards have the benefit of playing in the worst division in the NL and are thus nipping at the heels of Milwaukee for first-place in the Central despite having the seventh-best record in the senior circuit. That leaves them in a tight battle for a wild card spot in the reimagined playoff picture. One area management felt needed an upgrade was the rotation and the Cards swung a deal with the Yankees at the deadline to acquire Jordan Mongomery.

I guess the rest of the hurlers got the message with consecutive shutouts over Washington and Chicago giving them four wins in five games. Strong pitching allowed them to cash the UNDER in six of eight games. And they’ve been hot with the sticks in that span scoring at least five runs in every game. They got homers from sluggers Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado in a 6-0 win over the Cubs extending their streak of consecutive games with a big fly to 11.

Probable Pitchers

The Yankees are expected to give the ball to Domingo German (1-1, 6.39 ERA) on Saturday moving starters up a spot with a day off on Thursday. German will get a chance to stick in the rotation and improve on some poor numbers, though he’s pitched just 12.2 innings this season. Back in 2019 he went 18-4 in 27 games, 24 of them starts. The Yanks are hopeful the righty can return to that form, though it’s been a struggle in the early going. Making his season debut after missing the first half with a shoulder injury, German allowed six hits, two of them homers, and five runs over three innings in a loss to the Astros. He’s gotten progressively better over his three starts giving two runs in five innings last time out to beat Seattle.

The Cards haven’t named a starter yet, but there’s a chance Montgomery gets the nod against his former team. He last pitched for the Yankees on July 31 meaning his spot in the order is due and the club is interested in putting their new piece on the field. Mongomery was 3-3 with a 3.69 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 21 starts covering 114.2 innings for New York. But he showed signs of breaking down over his last two starts allowing nine hits and eight earned runs in 6.1 innings.

Both teams are hitting homers in bunches since the break and the Yankees lead MLB in that category as well as runs per game so we could see some fireworks. New York has settled down a bit since a scorching start but they still have massive amounts of talent and improved their bullpen at the deadline. I like the Yankees to get back on track in this one against a team that has been slightly above average.
