MLB Futures – World Series Odds

It’s around this time when you can look at the standings and have a better idea of where teams are and how the season is going to play out over the final few months. The Houston Astros remain the favorite to win the 2019 World Series and they are certainly a good pick. The Astros have the most complete team in the AL, though they own the third-best record entering the week. Minnesota continues to move up the odds board and made another impressive jump to +940. The Twins moved 20 games over .500 with MLB’s best record.

The top three teams on the odds list remained the same from the previous week, though the order changed. The Yankees moved into the second spot at +460 while the Los Angeles Dodgers dropped a notch to third at +465. The Dodgers continue to have the best record in the NL. Putting together a long winning streak will help a team’s odds and the Oakland A’s were big movers going from +20000 to +9000 after nine straight wins improved their standing.

At this point the American League appears to be stronger than the NL. The Astros are doing what most expected them to do and the AL West is theirs to lose. Minnesota has flipped the script in the Central and is easily the class of that division. And the Yankees have climbed to the top of the East, though the lineup is much different than what most expected them to compete with.

The Twins were a wild card team two years ago and their roster is better this time around, so it shouldn’t be a complete surprise they are where they are. They have the benefit of playing in a weak division and the Twins have done plenty of damage against their AL Central brethren, building a double-digit lead entering the week. The Twins have mashed the ball and possess the largest run differential in MLB. The question is can they keep it up? You only have to qualify for the playoffs to have a chance and there doesn’t appear to be much competition with the Indians scuffling.

Considering what the Yankees have gone through on the injury front through the first two months, it’s remarkable they’ve forged their way to the top of the East. They will get bodies back later in the year and you know there will be a deal or several swung in the next few months. That’s just the way the Yanks do business.

The Dodgers are the favorite in the NL and they are on a collision course for a rematch with the Astros in the Fall Classic. The Phillies and Cubs are the next closest teams on the odds list, but they have issues that prevent them from getting higher on the list.

The Cubs turned things around after a horrible start to the season to gain control of the Central. However, their bullpen woes were front and center during an inconsistent week. It’s just hard to trust a team that doesn’t have a closer and their odds of +990 are a stretch.

More was expected from the NL East and the teams haven’t delivered. The Phils have used strong pitching to vault to the top while the offense remains inconsistent at best. The team with the most upside in the division and possibly in the NL is Atlanta. The Braves have some of the best young talent in MLB and a recent hot streak has oddsmakers taking notice. They went from +4500 to +3,500 on the recent odds list.
