Odds Analysis

Both of these teams cruised to big wins over their Group A counterparts in their first game of the Women’s World Cup.

The Norwegians received quite the test from Nigeria in the opening 15 minutes. Nigeria were constantly moving and their pace seemed to unsettle the Norwegians who nearly let in a goal before settling down. A Guro Reiten goal off of a deflection opened the scoring for Norway in the 17th minute, and then Lisa-Marie Karlseng Utland doubled the Grasshoppers’ lead in the 34th minute. A few minutes later, a Nigerian own goal decided the matter, and the second half was largely listless in a 3-0 Norway win.

Friday was a big celebration for the French. As hosts, France played the first game and didn’t share the spotlight with any other team. They were on display for the world to see and showed they were a team to be reckoned with in a 4-0 victory over South Korea. Eugenie Le Sommer scored the tournament’s first goal in the ninth minute, and Wendie Renard knocked in a brace just before halftime. Amandine Henry sealed the deal for the French in the 85th minute giving Les Bleues the tournament’s biggest win thus far.

Norway Player to Watch

Caroline Graham Hansen is the main playmaker for Norway. Hansen made a name for herself at Wolfsburg and signed with Champions League runner-up Barcelona a few weeks ago. She has established herself as a quintessential playmaker that can affect the game in multiple facets, and she is going to play a pivotal role if Norway are going to pull off the upset.

France Player to Watch

It’s hard to focus on just one player for a French team that is absolutely loaded with talent. Le Sommer is likely to be the primary goal scorer throughout this competition though, so she’s the one to keep your eye on. She has a ton of experience and is likely to finish her national career with more than 100 goals, but she is just 30 and still in her prime. Her play for Lyon has been inspired over the years, and Le Sommer has a homing beacon for goal like few others.

The Norwegians will put up a tough fight. Norway are a disciplined, smart squad that plays solid defense and they won’t get their doors blown off by the French. However, that’s not to say they pick up the victory here. France have too much firepower, and they are strong at too many positions for Norway to hold the fort. This French team is looking to make a deep run at this World Cup, and they very well could win it all.

2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup Odds: France 2, Norway 1
