UFC on ESPN 6 Odds - Maycee Barber vs. Gillian Robertson Betting Picks

Undefeated flyweight prospect Maycee “The Future” Barber (7-0, 4 KOs, 2 SUBs) will meet Gillian “The Savage” Robertson (7-3, 1 KO, 5 SUBs) at UFC on ESPN 6 on Saturday, October 18, 2019 at the TD Garden in Boston, MA. The main card airs live on ESPN starting 9pm ET.

It takes a lot of confidence to dub yourself “The Future”, but confidence is not something that Maycee Barber lacks. The 21-year old is one of the UFC’s brightest flyweight prospects, and she’s a flawless 7-0 in her pro MMA career to boot. After scoring a UFC contract with a TKO on DWCS in 2018, Barber has notched back-to-back knockouts of Hannah Cifers and JJ Aldrich inside the octagon. This Saturday, she’ll look to keep her flawless resume intact and introduce herself to a much wider audience on an ESPN network event in Boston.

Hoping to derail the hype is Gillian Robertson, who is a solid prospect in her own right. Robertson is a TUF alum who has compiled a 4-1 UFC record - with all four wins coming by finish. Her only loss inside the octagon came against Mayra Silva in 2018, but she’s since righted the ship with a submission finish of Veronica Macedo and TKO against Sara Frota this past July.

It’ll be a while until either fighter is considered a legitimate title contender, but there is ample opportunity inside the UFC’s newest division. The flyweight weight class is still sorting itself out under champion Valentina Shevchenko, and both women are already ranked inside the top 15 despite the lack of a signature win inside the promotion. You can expect the winner to crack the top 10 and secure a top 7 opponent next.

In a vacuum, this should be a fun fight between two girls who are aggressive when it comes to hunting finishes. It was fair to question whether Barber’s bullying style would translate as she moved up to flyweight. However, she was able to overwhelm JJ Aldrich with ease in her 125-pound debut - though she still looked extremely raw in the victory. Her striking is still developing, but she has the natural power and athleticism to truck through opponents with a combination of clinch fighting and wrestling. Like the early version of Paige VanZant, Barber gets wins simply by being tough, tireless and absolutely relentless. Sooner or later she will have to evolve into a well-rounded mixed martial artist, but against the lower rung she can get by on physical talent.

Robertson isn’t as gifted an athlete, but she’s surprised many with a filthy submission game. However, her only loss came against another good athlete in Mayra Bueno Silva, and it was a fight that gave us a glimpse of Robertson’s ceiling. Unlike Barber, the 24-year old has yet to develop any sort of fighting identity, but the American Top Team product has been good at taking what’s given to her and making hay. The lack of a strong fighting identity could hurt here - it’ll require discipline and technique to unravel a wild fighter like Barber.

UFC Odds Pick: Barber to win inside the distance +150

Though we’re usually hesitant to pick raw prospects, Robertson isn’t the type of crafty vet who can exploit Barber’s inexperience. This is also a case where Barber is clearly more physically talented, and her relentless pace will be something that Robertson won’t be able to handle. The straight up win price on Maycee is too high for our liking, but we do like the victory bet that she takes this inside the distance.
