Jessica Andrade (20-8, 7 KOs, 7 SUBs)

After capturing the belt with a stunning pile driver KO of Rose Namajunas, Andrade has lost two straight. She lost the belt to powerhouse Weili Zhang, who needed just 42 seconds to flatline the Brazilian. After that came a rematch with Namajunas, which resulted in the 29-year old losing a split decision after a hard-fought three rounds. By no means did those losses knock her from the elite tier at 115, but it did remove her from the immediate title picture. After seeing how Cynthia Calvillo moved up to 125 and vaulted to the No. 2 spot after a single win, Andrade has an opportunity to move back into title contention against the No. 1 contender Katlyn Chookagian.

Of course, the flyweight division could just be rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic considering how dominant champion Valentina Shevchenko has been.

Andrade should be fine facing bigger fighters - she’s always been a powerhouse. However, what made her so successful at 115 was her ability to overwhelm opponents with her savage physicality. At her best, Andrade was walking down opponents and hammering away with hooks. We’re not sure she can do that so easily here.

Katlyn Chookagian (14-3, 2 KOs, 1 SUB)

A former bantamweight, Chookagian has done relatively well in her natural weight class. Wins over JoJo Calderwood and Jennifer Maia led to a title match against Shevchenko - where she was unsurprisingly dominated and finished. She was able to exact some revenge this past May, as Chookagian scored a win over sister Antonina Shevchenko. That’s enough for her to maintain the No. 1 contender spot - although it does reflect how thin this weight class is.

Chookagian fights a lot like Holly Holm: lots of movement and minimal power. She gets her wins by piling up striking points, but Chookgian has shown more willingness to turn over on her punches to do more damage. While she’s not a great athlete, Chookagian moves well enough while sliding in and out of range. She tends to have trouble with stronger opponents who lock her up in the clinch, and it’s likely Andrade will try and test that out at some point. If she can’t escape a lock against the cage, it figures to be a long night.

UFC Picks

Picking a winner is a dicey proposition. Andrade is the faster, more aggressive fighter but Chookagian tends to do well against opponents who try to apply pressure. Instead, we love the decision prop, as Chookagian has only been finished once and does not have the power to knock out Andrade. With only three rounds, there’s a good chance that both women hang on to the scorecards.
