Carolina Hurricanes at New Jersey Devils

The Carolina Hurricanes are in second place, six points behind the New York Rangers in the Metropolitan Division standings. Carolina is an impressive 17-11-2 on road ice. Late on, Carolina has been one of the most profitable teams in the NHL. The Hurricanes got the cash in 11 of their last 16 games. Also, only three of those 16 games went over the total.

As always, Carolina is one of the best defensive teams in the NHL. Carolina ranks 5th in the NHL for goals allowed and 3rd for penalty killing. Offensively, Carolina ranks 12th for goal scoring but 3rd for power play efficiency.

On March 4, the New Jersey Devils threw in the towel and fired head coach Lindy Ruff, replacing him with Travis Green. Green was the associate coach and took over on an interim basis. General manager Tom Fitzgerald said that the Devils playoff hopes were not sustainable without a change.

The Devils are in the red on home ice with a record of 14-16-2. They are eight points behind the Tampa Bay Lighting for the final playoff spot in the East. New Jersey’s weakness is a defense that ranks 27th for goals against. The Devils have dropped six of their last eight games. Six of New Jersey’s last nine games went over the total.

Carolina won 11 of its last 14 games against New Jersey. Carolina won three of its last five visits to New Jersey. Three of the last four meetings in this series at New Jersey went over the total.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Boston Bruins

The Pittsburgh Penguins made the Stanley Cup Playoffs every season from 2008 through 2022 with three Stanley Cups. However, those days of glory are over. Future Hall of Famer Sidney Crosby is the one constant in that period. But while Crosby remains an elite player the surrounding cast of the Penguins no longer provides adequate support.

Pittsburgh is eight points behind the Tampa Bay Lightning for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot. Of great concern is that the Penguins have lost eight of their last 13 games. Five of their most recent six games went over the total. The big weakness for Pittsburgh is their ranking of 25th for goals scored and 29th for power play efficiency. These metrics illustrate the burden Crosby must carry. Pittsburgh is an alarming 12-14-4 on road ice.

The Boston Bruins trail the Florida Panthers by three points for the lead in the Eastern Conference standings. Boston is fighting to clinch the top seed in the Eastern Conference for home ice advantage in the first three rounds.

Boston got the cash in three of their most recent four games against Pittsburgh. Three of those games went over the total. Specifically in Boston, the Bruins won two of their last three games against Pittsburgh. Six of the last nine meetings in this series at Boston went under the total.

Pittsburgh lacks Boston’s firepower and depth.
