2020 NHL Stanley Cup Futures Odds Analysis

2020 NHL Stanley Cup Futures Odds Analysis

Current NHL odds have the Tampa Bay Lightning as the favorite to win the 2020 Stanley Cup championship. What may be the most interesting nugget from the Stanley Cup futures board is that the defending Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues are not a top tier chalk. St. Louis shocked the hockey world with their Cinderella run last spring. Stuck with the worst record in the NHL on New Year’s Day the Blues went on a remarkable and historic march that is unlikely to ever happen again. What is most ironic of all is that the Blues could be a much better team than they were last season and yet not win the Stanley Cup in 2020.

2020 Stanley Cup Futures Odds Analysis and Overview

Public betting money is flowing to Tampa Bay based on their status as Presidents Trophy champions for the best regular season record in the NHL last year. The Vegas Golden Knights operate in the mecca of gambling and are a good but not great team with a large following from those that like to bet. The Toronto Maple Leafs are the ultimate blue blood team with the biggest fan base in the NHL. Toronto is a good team and that is all it takes for massive amounts of cash the be wagered on them.

St. Louis Blues

Will there be a Stanley Cup championship hangover in the Gateway City? It would not at all be surprising if that is so. Goaltender Jordan Binnington has gone from a minor leaguer on loan to a Stanley Cup winner. Binnington is no longer the rookie Cinderella but now the established number one netminder. Can he and the Blues maintain their edge?

Boston Bruins

The defending Eastern Conference champions were exposed in the Stanley Cup Final by the Blues. Boston is a very good team that simply didn’t have enough to finish. The long grind of last year’s playoffs and a loaded Eastern Conference make a repeat unlikely.

Toronto Maple Leafs

It now looks as if top scorer Mitch Marner may remain in TO after all. The Maple Leafs biggest move was acquiring defenseman Tyson Barrie along with depth center Alexander Kerfoot from Colorado. In particular Barrie will be expected to shore up a lackluster defensive unit that ranked 20th in the NHL for goals against. Toronto is a very good but not great team that has failed to show the ability to shut down a team facing playoff elimination.

Viva Vegas?

The Vegas Golden Knights may be the biggest overlay on the NHL futures board. Vegas finished 46-34-7-2 last year and ranked 13th for goal scoring, 25th for the power play, 10th for goals against and 14th for the penalty kill. When they had the chance to kill off San Jose in the playoffs, they blew their 3-1 series lead.

2020 Stanley Cup Free Picks

The Tampa Bay Lightning are the best and most complete team in the NHL. Their stunning playoff failure against Columbus should serve as motivational fuel for a better effort in 2020. Few experts doubt the Lightning and their ability.
