Workday Charity Open Golf Odds to Win

The PGA Tour stops in Dublin, Ohio, this week for the first of two straight tournaments at Muirfield Village Country Club. First-round action in the one-off Workday Charity Open is set for Thursday. Bryson DeChambeau became the fourth outright favorite to win a PGA Tour event this season when he captured the Rocket Mortgage Classic. He decided to take this week off leaving others at the top of the odds chart battling it out. Justin Thomas, who missed the cut at the Travelers and didn’t play last week, hit the board as the betting favorite. He’s followed closely by Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka and Patrick Cantlay as seven of the top-15 ranked players in the world go for the debut title. Odds Analysis

Patrick Cantlay +1352

It’s easy to look at the favorite at this price. That tells us, however, that there isn’t a lot separation in the field. Cantlay is the last player to win at Muirfield Village, taking last year’s Memorial by two-swings with a 19-under par. His game excelled on this track and there’s no reason to think it can’t happen again. In six Tour starts this season, Cantlay has placed among the top 17 in all of them, including a T11 at the Travelers in his only post-lockdown start. Toss in a fourth-place showing at the 2018 Memorial here and it’s hard to look past Cantlay.

Rickie Fowler +3085

The only way to explain Fowler’s recent play is like being on a roller coaster. The results haven’t been great this season with MCs at the Schwab and RBC Heritage out of the lockdown. Looking to find some sense of his game, Fowler looked sharper last week stringing together four competitive rounds to grab a share of 12th. A confidence boost heading to a track that’s treated Fowler well has me leaning toward him. Fowler was runner-up at Muirfield in the 2017 Memorial and grabbed a pair of top-14s in the last two.

Viktor Hovland +2299

There aren’t a lot of players who have competed in every event since the reboot. Hovland is one of them. He’s been solid finishing in the top-23 in all four of those tournaments and he gets a course that’s more to his liking this week. He will need to putt better, but Muirfield takes more of an approach technique with obstacles around nearly every hole, and Hovland does that splendidly.

Marc Leishman +4000

If Leishman can finally concentrate on playing golf he’s a solid pick with a nice payday. Concerned about playing because of his wife’s preexisting medical condition, Leishman didn’t look fully on board with a MC at the Schwab and T58 at Travelers. Some of those concerns were alleviated with the Tour’s strict safety protocols, and Leishman no doubt wants a crack at a course that’s been good to him. He had a win and runner-up at two of his favorites before the shutdown, so why not take a chance at Muirfield, where he has a pair of top-5s among four top-15s in his last five starts.

Kevin Streelman +7000

We can look further down the odds board here since we’ve already had a few players make their way to the winner’s circle from down the list. Sure, there is talent at the top. We also saw that at the Schwab and look what happened. Streelman finished second at the Travelers two weeks ago and rested up to attack a layout that’s yielded him three top-15s in the last four years at the Memorial.

Course: Muirfield Village Golf Club – 7,456 yards, Par 72

Designed by Jack Nicklaus and affectionately known as Jack’s Place, Muirfield Village has been a longtime Tour host. The venue is so beloved that consecutive tournaments will be contested on the layout with the Memorial next in line. The setup will be different for both events with the WDC playing longer at 7,456 yards. There are generous fairways and fast greens, but strategically placed bunkers surround a number of greens leaving the field playing for a second shot. And that has been the winning formula over the years as opposed to bombing it off the tee. You don’t want to get caught on the beach with a success rate for sand saves below Tour average. Most golfers concur that Muirfield is a second-shot layout that yields favorable scores with excellent ball striking and proper positioning off the tee.
