Workday Charity Open Golf Matchup Odds

For the first time since 1957 the PGA Tour will use the same course for consecutive events. Muirfield Village Country Club serves as host to this week’s late-addition Workday Charity Open while also preparing for the more prestigious Memorial the following week. Golfers competing in both events will see a different track however as organizers do their best to challenge the pros. Seven of the top-15 players in the OWGR are among the field with No. 2 Jon Rahm emerging as the betting favorite. A quality field of 156 players offers up some interesting matchups, some of which we’ll have a look at. Need to Know

Muirfield Village should play right into the hands of the top contenders. The Jack Nicklaus-designed layout stretches to over 7,400 yards at par 72 and has wide fairways and fast greens. Despite the generous amount of grass, there is danger if players stray from the fairways. Bunkers defending the greens are tricky so we’ll see a number of players club down. This track does become a second-shot course making accuracy and iron play important tools. The track will also have a different look between the two events. The rough is growing in advance of next week’s Memorial and the greens will be slower. For the second week in a row I cashed two matchups, hitting on underdog Tyrrell Hatton in one. Things have gotten better, though I’m still in the black since the reboot. I’m working on changing that.

Workday Charity Open Matchup Picks

Marc Leishman +100 vs. Matt Kuchar

A pair of golfers on familiar Muirfield ground should make for an interesting matchup. The restart to Leishman’s season has been slow with concerns about COVID and his spouse’s preexisting medical condition playing a big role. Now able to concentrate on his game, Muirfield is the perfect location for a bounce back after MC-T58 in his first two starts. Leishman has a pair of fifth-place showings among his four top-15s here, and his approach game has been one of the best on Tour.

Matthew Wolff +110 vs. Scottie Scheffler

There are just a handful of players who have competed in every tournament since the reboot. Wolff is one of them and he’s coming off his best showing with a runner-up at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Wolff shouldn’t be too exhausted since he missed the cut in the previous two events. He will look to build off a solid effort in Detroit where his ball-striking was phenomenal and his birdies-or-better rate the best on Tour.

Brooks Koepka +105 vs. Xander Schauffele

Taking last week off as a precaution and sitting out the previous event, Koepka enters well-rested having not played since a T7 at Harbour Town where he led the field in driving distance and strokes gained: off the tee. His GIR was among the leaders as well. Putting remains an issue, but his strengths of distance and strong wedge play will definitely serve him well at Muirfield this week.

Cameron Champ -105 vs. Harold Varner III

Having to withdraw from the Travelers due to safety protocols seemed to benefit Champ as he returned with a T12 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic where he ranked second among the field in strokes gained: off the tee. Champ found his game over the hiatus opening with a T14 at the Schwab. He missed the cut in two starts before the shutdown. He has the distance to dominate averaging over 322 yards per drive and his GIR percentage is among the top-30. Champ is built for this course and will triumph in this matchup.

Kevin Streelman -105 vs. Byeong Hun An

Streelman runs hot and cold, and right now he’s hot after going 67 or lower in all four rounds to take second at the Travelers. He’s enjoyed success at TPC River Highlands and the same goes for Muirfield, which has yielded him three top-10s among his five career top-20s. I’ll ride the veteran at a place he feels comfortable.
