TOUR Championship Golf Odds

The FedExCup Championship will be decided this weekend at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta when the top 30 players in the standings gather for the season ending TOUR Championship. Accumulating points over the course of the season comes in handy this week with two-time winner Scottie Scheffler locking down the top spot for a second straight year. That gives Scheffler a head start on the field in the staggered leaderboard format and has him positioned as the betting favorite ahead of reigning FedExCup champ Rory McIlroy. Scheffler opens the tournament at 10-under with Viktor Hovland second in the standings at 8-under following his comeback win last week. McIlroy starts in the third position at 7-under. There is a gradual decline to the bottom five, who all start at even-par with odds greater than 200/1. Odds Analysis

Lucas Glover +5800

This is a leap backing Glover, but the precedent has been set with McIroy winning from this spot. And let’s face it, two months ago he wasn’t even a blip on the playoff radar. It’s about getting hot at the right time and Glover is scorching with back to back wins at the Wyndham and FedEx St. Jude among his five top 6s in his last seven starts. He has some ground to make up, but the way Glover is playing that doesn’t appear to be a big issue.

Max Homa +4450

The odds are skewed because of a players starting position in the staggered format. Homa stockpiled points early in the season when he was blistering hot. He maintained a good enough position through a mid-season mini slump and has since recovered again. I backed him last week and although he didn’t win he showed off his all-around game earning a T5. He made up enough strokes last year to earn a top 5 from the 16th position carding a second round 62 at East Lake. Maybe he has more magic left in the sticks.

Viktor Hovland +560

Outside of Scheffler, Hovland is in a prime spot as the No. 2 seed. And he’s bursting with confidence after rallying with a final round course record 61 to win the BMW Championship. He’s been sensational all year winning twice with a third victory at the unofficial Hero World Challenge. And he went the entire season without missing a cut. That has no bearing this week, but it does show just how consistently good he’s been.

Jon Rahm +685

We’ve rarely seen Rahm string together several bad outings in a row and with a spot in the TOUR Championship guaranteed after a four-win season, maybe there wasn’t enough pressure. Well, those duds at the FedEx St. Jude and BMW are history dropping Rahm down from the top spot in the standings to No. 4, He’s a veteran of six previous TOUR Championships and knows what it takes to succeed at East Lake so count on getting the best version of Rahm this week.

Xander Schauffele +2400

No one has ever come from Schauffele’s starting point at 3-under to win the TOUR Championship. And the X-man hasn’t won all season, so the likelihood of that happening is slim. I would’ve jumped on Schauffele at a higher price instead of cautiously backing him at his going rate. Still, he’s a consistent player with plenty of experience and positive showing at East Lake. He won here in 2017 and had the lowest aggregate score in 2020. In his last six visits his scoring average is 67.25.

Course: East Lake Golf Club – 7,346 yards, Par 70

The staggered strokes format is in use for the fifth straight year, but the host venue remains the same. East Lake became the tournament’s permanent home in 2004. At 7,346 yards and par 70 it’s an easy course as long as you keep the ball in the fairway. In terms of width, the fairways rank in the bottom 10 and along with firm grass it becomes difficult to keep the golf ball on the fairways. Straight off the tee with a strong short game and you’ll be just fine. That’s easier said than done, though. On average the field hits fairways here just over half the time. In 11 editions prior to the current format winning scores ranged between -7 and -13 making it difficult for players at the bottom of the pack to make shots. McIlroy is the only player to win who wasn’t No. 1. He prevailed in 2019 from the fifth spot and made up six strokes last year to win as the seven-seed.
