RSM Classic Golf Matchups

The PGA Tour concludes its season schedule with the field headed to majestic St. Simons Island in Georgia this week for the RSM Classic. The new FedExCup Fall slate puts added emphasis on the tournaments with players looking to get exemptions once the new season begins in January. Most high-profile players are hibernating over the Holiday break leaving a watered down field topped by Ludvig Aberg on the outright betting board. Those familiar with the tournament will again see the unique two-course format with the field of up to 156 golfers playing the first two rounds on the Seaside and Plantation courses at Sea Island Resort. Those surviving the cut will play the weekend on the more familiar Seaside layout. All the top favorites on the outright betting board are featured in tournament matchups with updated odds available at BookMaker.eu when you’re ready to place a wager.

Need to Know

With days getting shorter using two courses is about the only way to accommodate a full field. Each player gets 18 holes on what is considered the easier 7,058-yard, par-72 Plantation course over the first two days with a chance to make up ground or create separation. This course got a facelift a few years ago, though it didn’t affect the scores. Those making the cut will play the final 54 holes on the coastal Seaside layout, which measures 7,005 yards and plays at par 70. It’s a short track with few hazards so hitting fairways and greens are more important than distance. Five of the last nine editions went to extra holes with two others decided by three swings or less. Adam Svensson won last year at 19-under becoming the sixth straight winner to hit that number or better.

RSM Classic Matchup Picks

Brian Harman +124 vs. Russell Henley

I caught a few players with favorable odds in my matchups including this one. Harman is at plus odds because he hasn’t played in a few months, but when he last swung a stick he was solid. He was a bright spot for the Americans going 2-2-0 in his first Ryder Cup and he finished the regular season portion of the schedule with eight straight paydays, including a win at The Open among his four top 10s. A lot of time off is always worrisome but I like what Harman did on the lead up.

Justin Suh -104 vs. Si Woo Kim

A little more consistency and Suh will be a regular at the top of the leaderboard. He’s moved over from a successful run on the Korn Ferry Tour and has played some of his best golf recently. He held the 54-hole lead at the ZOZO before slipping to 10th. He didn’t let that break him responding with a solo fourth in his next start at the World Wide Technology Championship. And he had a fast start here last year before faltering. Still, I like his game and where it’s headed.

Webb Simpson +103 vs. Mackenzie Hughes

Simpson is catching plus odds because of his success at Sea Island and not because he’s playing strong golf on the lead in. He does appear to be over some injury issues that hampered him, which is a good sign coming to a joint he’s done everything but win at. He made the cut in 10 straight starts before a second round 74 did him in last year. Still, with a pair of playoff losses and five top 10s he’s a good bet with plus odds making it sweeter.

Matthias Schmid +116 vs. Taylor Pendrith

Always in search of value in my picks I scooped up Schmid at his price. Following a strong career on the European Tour, the young German had a tough go on the PGA side earlier this season before responding with three straight paydays and podium finish last time out in Bermuda. He returned to Europe a month ago securing a runner-up finish at the Andalucia Masters carding a closing 65.

Eric Cole +106 vs. J.T. Poston

With four of my matchup picks at plus odds I have a chance to make a killing this week. Cole is another player that forced me to do a double take when I saw his price. He’s had a strong fall virtually locking down Rookie of the Year with a T2 at the ZOZO, T3 at the Shriners and a solo fourth in Napa. With 14 straight paydays he’s a solid bet in this matchup with his price only making it better.
