PGA Tour Picks - Odds To Win The RSM Classic

The final stop on the PGA Tour before breaking for the Holiday season takes place this week in St. Simons Island, Georgia, when the expanded field competes in The RSM Classic. A total of 156 players will reach the cut line playing across two courses at Sea Island Golf Club with the survivors playing the final two rounds on the more familiar Seaside layout. Although some of the world’s top players are skipping the event, there is plenty of intrigue on the betting lines.

At +750 and the highest ranked player in the field, Tour Championship winner Webb Simpson opened as the betting favorite at BookMaker.eu. There is a significant drop in the odds to second favorite Cameron Champ, who opened at +1725. Defending champion Austin Cook is further down the odds list at +2850.

Odds Analysis

Webb Simpson + 750

Clearly the class of the field it’s hard not to take a good look at Simpson. The odds are long but winning is always better than the alternative. He’s a southern guy and the layout is to his liking. Not a particularly big hitter, Simpson does most of his damage on approach and around the greens, ranking as one of the best on Tour last season. In his first start since claiming the Tour Championship in September, Simpson shot -13 at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open a few weeks ago to grab a share of 15th. He’s also the highest ranked player in the field at No. 20.

Cameron Champ +1725

You wouldn’t think this course is suited for Champ’s distance-off-the-tee game, but he’s playing so well right now he’s just hard to ignore on any course he plays. He’s hit more fairways than the field in six of nine starts and his short game is simply overlooked by his towering drives. Champ is having a great start to the season with a win at the Sanderson Farms Championship and a top-10 at El Cameleon last week. He’s familiar with the layout having played the SEC Championships here while attending Texas A&M.

Kevin Kisner +2805

Recent form be damned, this is an event where Kisner has had success and his game fits the mold for how to win at Seaside. The task is to hit fairways and greens, and Kisner does that with regularity. He ranked 30th in fairways and 13th in strokes gained on the green last Tour season. He’s from this neck of the woods and he’s talked glowingly about Sea Island in the past. Why not, he won here two years ago with a -21 and he has two other top-5s and a T20. Not too bad.

Harold Varner III +4000

A longshot with plenty of value, Varner enters on a bit of a hot streak. He blew up in the second round of the Sanderson Farms Championship, missing the cut after a 79, but he’s responded in a big way. Getting back in the saddle the following week, he went under par all four days for a T15 at the Shriners and carded a pair of 65s along with a 68 and 69 to claim a T6 in Mexico last week. Varner has been solid around the greens and his putter is steady, giving him a chance to make up strokes.

Course: Seaside Island Golf Course – 7,005-yards, Par-70

Those surviving the cut will play the weekend on the Seaside course. The distance of Seaside is relatively short at just over 7,000 yards when stretched out with few hazards along the fairways. That makes hitting fairways and greens more important than distance off the tees. Two of the past three winners scored in the -20s so the layout isn’t the most difficult. The greens are larger than most with an emphasis on short iron approach shots and strong putting.
