PGA Tour Picks - CIMB Classic Golf Odds

World No. 4 Justin Thomas headlines the field for the CIMB Classic in Malaysia this week. Thomas has won twice previously in Malaysia and he is the clear favorite to win this week at odds of +550. Ryan Moore is the distant second choice in the betting odds at +1400, while Billy Horschel is the third choice at odds of +1600. Let’s look at this event that begins a three-week stretch of tournaments in Asia, odds and predictions for the CIMB Classic.

Odds Analysis

Justin Thomas +550

The odds on Thomas are low, but how can you argue? He has won this event twice in three previous visits. He was one of the few American players to play well at the Ryder Cup and he was a combined 49-under par in winning this event in 2015 and 2016.

Ryan Moore +1400

Moore has also won this event twice, in 2013 and in 2014. He may have turned the corner last week at the Safeway where he tied for second.

Billy Horschel +1600

Horschel has not played this event since 2015. He is an extremely streaky player and we’ll see if he starts off the new season hot or not. I’ll pass until I see what type of mood he is in to start with.

Xander Schauffele +1800

I think there is some value in taking Schaueffele at these odds. He tied for third in this event last year and he closed out the FedExCup Playoffs with back-to-back top ten finishes.

Paul Casey +2000

Casey tied for 7th in this event last year. He tied for 11th at the TOUR Championship and then played well at the Ryder Cup. The problem with taking Casey is that he simply doesn’t win that often.

Keegan Bradley +2200

Bradley has top ten finishes in this event in three of his four starts including a 2nd place finish last year. He won the BMW and then finished in a tie for 26th at the TOUR Championship.

Pat Perez +5000

I can’t ignore the defending champion at these odds. Thomas and Moore have both defended this title and I think Perez at least has some kind of a chance and we get him at big odds.

Kiradech Aphibarnrat +8000

I am surprised the odds on Aphibarnrat are this high. He is a full PGA Tour member now and he came close to winning this event in 2013. No Asian has won this event, but I think Aphibarnrat could be the first and we get him at big odds.

Course: The TPC Kuala Lumpur West course is a par 72 that measures 7,005 yards. It opened up 28 years ago and has hosted events on the PGA Tour, European Tour and LPGA Tour. The West course hosted the Malaysia Open for seven years. The course was redesigned in 2008 by Ted and Geoff Parslow. This course is relatively easy, as it ranked 41st out of 51 courses last year on the PGA Tour.
