Mexico Open at Vidanta Golf Matchups

An official event on the PGA Tour for the first time, the Mexico Open at Vidanta has actually been around since the 1940’s playing as the country’s national open. There are several big-name players among the full-field ready to peg it up at Vidanta Vallarta, which is set to host this tournament for the next three years. The biggest name of the group is also the highest ranked player and the prohibitive favorite in the outright market. Jon Rahm is set to compete for the first time since the Masters and he’s looking to get his game in shape after five starts outside the top-15. Rahm is also heavily favored in his tournament matchups so we’ll have to find better value picks in those. Visit BookMaker.eu for a complete list of round and tournament matchup betting odds when you’re ready to place a wager.

Need to Know

The field is even as far as the course is concerned since it is new to the rotation. There were changes made to Vidanta Vallarta ahead of the PGA Tour arrival with additional yardage tacked on and bunkers added and reshaped. The course stretches to over 7,400 yards at par-71 and is similar to other seaside resort courses that are prevalent on Tour. Wide fairways open it up to the big hitters, which could be advantageous. The layout for a par 71 is a little different with four par-5s and five par-3s. Bombers will have an edge on five par-4 holes that measure 475 yards or longer. The pros usually devour resort courses and Vidanta Vallarta shouldn’t be any different. There is no history but we could easily see the winning score get into the 20-under range.

Mexico Open at Vidanta Matchup Picks

Kevin Na -105 vs. Chris Kirk

With attention on his game following the birth of his child we’ve seen how good Na can be. He made it out of the group stage to finish 9th at the WGC Match Play, T14 at Augusta and T26 last time out at the RBC Heritage. He had a nice run in Hawai’i at the start of the year with two top-20s and was victorious in the unofficial QBE Shootout last December. Apparently he likes the resort locations and its courses.

Austin Smotherman +100 vs. Nick Taylor

Outside of a few big numbers on players matched against Rahm, there aren’t many plus-odds matchups. I looked at this one for a few reasons. Smotherman has had decent finishes in similar-field tournaments with a T11 at the Farmers and T25 at the Valspar. He hits the ball a long way and has gained off the tee and on approach in four of his last five starts. He also won this tournament in 2019, albeit at a different venue. And at even money Smotherman looks like a good return.

Matt Jones -110 vs. Doug Ghim

A long, resort-style course designed by Greg Norman was on the menu a few weeks back and Jones had an outstanding tournament finishing as runner-up at the Texas Open. There a number of similarities that had me look harder at Jones in this matchup and the more I looked the more I liked. It was just over a year ago he won the Honda Classic and after a quiet stretch Jones emerged with two top-5s among his three top-15s in 2022.

Tony Finau -120 vs. Gary Woodland -110

It hasn’t been the best stretch by Finau’s standards, but the course in Mexico sets up well for his skill set. And he hasn’t become a bad golfer, though he’s gone nearly eight months without a top-25 in a full-field event. Finau should take advantage of the generous fairways with his distance off the tee and his precision approach shots will set up scoring chances. He’s also looking to move up the FedExCup rankings from his spot at No. 149. This is a good course and a good field for him to do that.

Cameron Champ -115 vs. Carlos Ortiz -115

Bothered by a wrist injury it appears as though Champ is finally starting to get healthy. Another big hitter, he leads the Tour averaging over 320 yards on his drives. And like I mentioned the course will benefit the bombers. He still has to convert those chances and we saw him do that leading to a T10 at the Masters.
