Mexico Open at Vidanta Golf Matchups

Starting for the first time since his triumph at the Masters earlier this month, world No. 1 Jon Rahm is a huge favorite to repeat at the Mexico Open at Vidanta. The field has thinned out from previous tournaments with Tony Finau and Wyndham Clark the next favorites on the outright betting board. That doesn’t mean the rest of the full field doesn’t have a chance, but the way Rahm is playing it could be a foregone conclusion. His win in Mexico last year started a run of five titles in his last 20 PGA Tour starts. While this is only the second PGA sanctioned tournament, the event has been played since the 1940’s as the country’s national open with Vidanta Vallarta hosting for the first time in 2022. Rahm finished one swing better than a trio of players at 17-under and is a massive favorite to repeat in a matchup between the two favorites. Need to Know

Hosting a PGA Tour event for the first time last year, Vidanta Vallarta offered little resistance to the field with 23 golfers finishing double digits under par. There were changes made to the layout ahead of the Tour’s arrival with additional yardage tacked on and bunkers added and reshaped. The course stretches to 7,456 yards at par-71 and is similar to other seaside resort courses we see on Tour. Wide fairways open it up to big hitters, which could be advantageous. The layout for a par 71 is a little different with four par-5s and five par-3s. Bombers will have an edge on five par-4 holes that measure 475 yards or longer. The pros usually devour resort courses and Vidanta Vallarta wasn’t much different last year despite several holes ranking among the most difficult on Tour last season.

Mexico Open at Vidanta Matchup Picks

Gary Woodland -110 vs. Patrick Rodgers

I reluctantly backed Woodland for the outright but I feel much better about him in this matchup. He hasn’t been in contention that often but he has been consistent playing the weekend in 10 of 14 starts with a WD. His best finish was a T9 twice and he recently placed among the top 15 at Augusta, sparking memories of his U.S. Open triumph a few years ago. That’s actually the last time he won on Tour so maybe he’s due.

Brandon Wu +106 vs. S.H. Kim

His best finish during his rookie campaign was right here when Wu finished one swing behind Rahm tied with a pair of golfers. He pressured the leaders with a closing 63 so I would think Wu would be eager to return. He’s been solid in his sophomore season racking up three top 20s, including a co-runner-up at Pebble Beach, in his last nine starts.

Beau Hossler -105 vs. Byeong Hun An

It’s been a roller-coaster ride for Hossler this season and right now he’s enjoying one of his highs. He had a pair of top 15s in February before a run of four consecutive MCs. He’s back in a groove with three straight paydays, including a disheartening third with partner Wyndham Clark at the Zurich where they had at least a share of the lead after each of the first three days. In all he has six top 25s and since he’s playing well he’s worth the risk.

Emiliano Grillo +112 vs. Alex Noren

An excellent ball striker, Grillo hasn’t fared as well as would like lately due in large part to struggles with the putter. Extra work appeared to pay off last time out with flat stick metrics improved leading to T7 at the RBC Heritage. It was Grillo’s third top 10 of the season but first since last October. Continued strong putting, along with his other attributes, makes Grillo an inviting pick at his price.

Chez Reavie +120 vs. Akshay Bhatia

I’m almost always looking for value picks and they are out there when it comes to matchups. A month ago I wouldn’t have given Reavie the time of day let alone place a bet on him. However, two solid outings following a string of six straight MCs have me paying closer attention to his price. The disastrous run ended earlier this month at the Texas Open when a closing 65 vaulted Reavie to a share of sixth. He followed with a T11 at Harbour Town giving him a much needed jolt of confidence.
