Butterfield Bermuda Championship Golf Matchups

Even a week in Bermuda is a hard sell to some of the PGA Tour’s bigger names. The third edition of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship will have a full field minus a large contingent of the sports best as they take time to relax and recuperate. That leaves the door wide open for an unsuspecting winner, much like we had last year when Brian Gay broke a winless drought of more than five years. Gay is back to defend his title, though he’s positioned further down the odds board. The top of the list is manned by Matthew Fitzpatrick, who is also a heavy favorite in a number of tournament matchups. Former Masters champ Patrick Reed looks to end a recent funk and should be in a good spot with Port Royal Golf Club a good fit for his game. Need to Know

With all of the big names opting out the chore of handicapping the field becomes more difficult. What isn’t difficult is the Port Royal layout. Stretched to 6,828 yards at par 71 it isn’t very demanding, though the up and down terrain can make it feel longer. The course didn’t scare Brendon Todd two years ago when he carded a 24-under. Last year’s scores were a bit more reasonable with Gay winning in a playoff at 15-under. Given the length we won’t see many drivers this week turning this into a second-shot contest where accuracy is the name of the game. Like most coastal layouts wind serves as the primary defense. Players who can navigate those conditions typically do well.

Butterfield Bermuda Championship Matchup Picks

Patrick Reed +127 vs. Matthew Fitzpatrick

I’m going to assume that since Reed is pegging it up this week he’s healthy. And a healthy Reed is dangerous. Being one of the bigger names in the field he’s among the favorites for the outright, but he’s not THE favorite. That’s because Fitzpatrick is at the top of the list leaving Reed at plus odds in this matchup. Reed’s gone nearly five months without at top-10 finish leading in part to the lofty price. But his short game and putting are among the best on Tour and will help him snap out of his funk on a course that requires those elements.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout -114 vs. Mito Pereira

I swayed back and forth on this matchup before finally settling on Bezuidenhout. This is the perfect tournament and field for the South African to make his PGA Tour debut without a lot of pressure. We know he can handle the pressure with several international titles, including back-to-back European Tour wins in his home country 10 months ago. He hasn’t teed it up since a solo fifth at the ET’s BMW PGA Championship so he should be well rested.

Brian Gay +158 vs. Brandon Hagy

Based on past performance at Port Royal it’s hard not to drop a few bucks on Gay at this price. His T3 two years ago was a nice finish for a guy who hasn’t had many of them over the last few years. He came back last year to capture the title in a playoff ending a long winless drought. There’s a reason why Gay can be bought at this price; he has only one top-25 anywhere since that first edition. It’s also hard to ignore his 66.88 scoring average over eight rounds at Port Royal.

Guido Migliozzi -117 vs. Garrick Higgo

I wanted to back Higgo in this matchup, but his recent play has me leaning the other way. Migliozzi hasn’t been that much better, but he’s been better and he’s shown he can compete at this level. He recorded a top-5 at the 2021 U.S. Open in his Tour debut and was T13 at the Travelers. More recently he earned a top-20 at the ET’s Dunhill Links Championship a few weeks ago.

Denny McCarthy +101 vs. Sahith Theegala

McCarthy is another player with a strong resume at Port Royal and that’s hard to overlook. And to get him at plus odds in this matchup makes the decision to back him that much easier. Following his T15 at Port Royal in 2019, McCarthy followed that by cracking the top-5 last year. And he’s been playing solid golf with a pair of top-20s in his last five starts.
