2021 Ryder Cup Golf Odds

The most exciting competition in golf is back on after a one-year COVID delay. The 43rd Ryder Cup is set to get underway on September 24 with Team USA looking to avenge a humbling defeat from 2018. The United States contingent has the benefit of playing at home with this year’s competition on the shores of Lake Michigan at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin. When the Cup was last held on U.S. soil in 2016, Team USA ended a three-match losing streak with a 17-11 win at Hazeltine Golf Club. The Europeans handed the favored Americans a 17½-10½ defeat at Le Golf National in France three years ago, but the Americans are the betting favorite to regain the Cup this year.

The Ryder Cup format consists of 28 total matches played over three days, each worth one point. There are no extra holes, meaning if the two sides are tied after 18, each side earns a half-point. Reaching 14½ points secures a victory, however, for the Europeans, getting a draw would allow them to retain the trophy. On top of the trophy lifting odds, BookMaker.eu also offers bets on the correct score, the top players from each side, the top rookies, and a plethora of other wagering options.

Europe +158

The top players from Europe and the United States convene every two years to compete for the Ryder Cup in a match-play tournament spanning three days. Team Europe boasts the world’s No. 1 ranked player in Jon Rahm, but the team’s average world ranking is only 31. The Americans are younger with less Ryder Cup experience overall, but their average world ranking is 9. Team USA has assembled a strong cast of golfers, but there’s more to winning than just being good.

Team USA captain Steve Stricker has transitioned the squad with young talent taking over. Six Ryder Cup rookies make the trek to Whistling Straits and for the first time since 1993 the Americans will not have Phil Mickelson or Tiger Woods competing. Lefty, however, is a Vice-Captain. The last time Team USA had six rookies competing they posted a convincing 16½-11½ win at Valhalla in 2008. And first-time Americans haven’t shown any jitters in previous matches going 26-15-5 over the last four Ryder Cup matches.

If you believe experience triumphs at the Ryder Cup, which is a good thought in such a pressure-packed environment, then Team Europe is a likely choice. Rory McIlroy, Paul Casey, Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter have all competed in at least four Ryder Cups. Dustin Johnson is the only American to appear in that many. Going with the next generation of golfers probably isn’t a bad move for Stricker since the Americans have lost four of the last five and seven of the previous nine Ryder Cup matches.

It’s hard to imagine Xander Schauffele is playing in his first Ryder Cup. The guy has been as steady as they come for the past few years and his recent Gold Medal at the Tokyo Olympics is a sign that he can handle the pressure on the big stage. The No. 5 ranked player in the world has no weaknesses and his length off the tee will allow him to have success on the Whistling Straits layout. If you’re looking to drop some coin on Teams USA’s top scorer, the X-man isn’t a bad pick at +726.

For the same price you can buy Jordan Spieth. He’s cooled off a bit since a torrid run in the middle of the PGA Tour season and he’s had all kinds of success with a 7-5-2 career Ryder Cup record. He’ll make up for a lack of distance with his elite iron play and will be a steadying influence on the young squad.

The success of Team Europe hinges on the play of four players. Rahm is the best player in the world right now and it isn’t even close. McIlroy is a Ryder Cup legend and Sergio Garcia is Europe’s all-time leading point scorer in the competition. Viktor Hovland could hold the key to victory, though. He’s built for this course with length and a birdie touch and could easily be the top scorer.

Ryder Cup Picks

Team USA needs to play nice with one another and if they do there’s no reason why they can’t get the Cup back. The feud between Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau could explode and the Americans will pay the price. There was a breakthrough, though, with both sides willing to bury the hatchet. Team USA was built for Whistling Straits with distance off the tee a top priority. Now they just have to use it to their advantage, and I see the Americans doing that.
