Game of Thrones Season Eight

The return of HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones led to a record-setting night for the network. Approximately 17.4 million viewers tuned in to watch the show on Sunday night, making it the most watched television event in the history of the network. The season eight premiere received largely positive reviews, but little of substance actually happened in a series with a lot left to tell in its final few episodes. That has led to Game of Thrones betting odds largely being unchanged entering the second episode of season eight.

Who Will Rule Westeros at the End of Season Eight?

Jon Snow +275
Bran Stark +400
Sansa Stark +450
Daenerys Targaryen +500
Gendry +500
The Night King +800
Arya Stark +800
Tyrion Lannister +900
Varys +1200
Jaime Lannister +1400
Samwell Tarly +1600
Cersei Lannister +2200
Euron Greyjoy +2800
Davos +5000

The first episode of the final season of Game of Thrones was all about putting characters into the right place. With such a large, overwhelming story arc it’s time to narrow storylines, and we saw a lot of chess pieces being moved around to further the narrative.

Jon Snow was finally told that he was the true heir to the Iron Throne, knowing what all of us have known since the sixth season. It’s been a wild ride for Jon as he went from the King in the North to bending the knee to Daenerys Targaryen, and the big questions going forward are whether or not he will divulge this information to the Dragon Queen and how she will react. She might well know that he has Targaryen blood from his ability to ride a dragon, but she is probably unaware to his true status.

Jon and Daenerys were the two favorites to sit the Iron Throne for most of the time off between Season Seven and Season Eight, but there has been action on two other Starks. Bran Stark became the betting favorite for a short spell after a flurry of bets on him a few months ago, yet his ascension is looking more unlikely as he seems almost inhuman now that he is the Three-Eyed Raven. There has been a lot of sharp action on Sansa though, and the shrewdness of her actions has led some to conclude that she will be able to rule Westeros.

At this price, Daenerys is my favorite play on the board. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Jon yield to her even if his heritage becomes widely known, and I still think the writers of the show will give us the ending we want after so much heartbreak over the last seven seasons.

Yara Greyjoy +1200
Bronn +1400

Brienne +1400

In the week before the season premiere, we saw a lot of action on Jaime Lannister to be the first major character to die in season eight. Jaime remains the favorite after the first episode, and we saw that his sister Cersei could be the instrument of his demise.

Cersei sent Qyburn to hire Bronn to kill Jaime and Tyrion, and with Tyrion having a much bigger role to play in what’s to come, it seems likely that Jaime could be the first person to die. At this point, there is nothing really for Jaime to do in terms of the story as he is out of King’s Landing, and his death would serve as evidence that Cersei does not intend to honor her promise of sending men north to the Wall.

Euron was the favorite to die first before the start of the season, and his cavalier attitude will likely lead to him dying within the next few episodes. He seems safe for at least one more episode though. The other three characters with 6-1 odds are very likely to die this season, particularly Theon and the Mountain, but it feels like their time is coming later.
