StarCraft 2 Nation Wars Preview

The StarCraft 2 Nation Wars will be held for the sixth time this weekend. Eight countries will send three players and one substitute to France to compete for national glory and pride. South Korea is the favorite to win this competition after winning the last two titles, and they are tied with Norway as the countries with the most gold medals at this event. They will look to become the first nation to win three championships this weekend.

StarCraft 2 Nation Wars Betting Odds

Italy -650
Mexico +431

The only team with all Zerg players at this competition is Italy, and that has served them well. Italy took on an all-Protoss team in Taiwan in the Group Stage of this competition, and they squeaked past them thanks to some excellent play from Reynor. He came up big again versus Canada to give Italy the group, and he has a 7-1 record in this competition.

Reynor is the main reason that Italy is such a massive favorite against Mexico. In this best of seven format, the best player for each country could take part in as many as five games, and Reynor is much better than anyone that Mexico has to offer.

Mexico are fortunate to be here. They were swept 4-0 by Germany, but they outlasted Brazil thanks to a 4-0 record from SpeCial using his Protoss. El Tri followed that up by stunning China 4-2 to advance to the knockout rounds, yet this is where their journey will end.

Finland -400
United States +292

Serral is the best Western player in the world, and he should lead Finland to the victory over the United States. The Finnish superstar has won three premier tournaments in the last three months, and he is the only non-Korean player to win two Triple Crowns. He is 7-1 in this competition thus far, and his play led to Finland knocking off Croatia and Poland.

Meanwhile, the United States did well to win two games off South Korea in the Group Stage, but they were nearly eliminated from the competition by the Netherlands. Neeb rose to the occasion to lead the US to the victory, yet it’s unlikely he can do the same against Serral. He was swept by the Finn 3-0 in the 2019 Fall WCS.

South Korea -1100
Canada +623

For years, South Korea has dominated the StarCraft scene. The best players in the world have come from this country, and that continues to be the case. Unlike other countries which have one excellent player and two mediocre players, South Korea boasts three world class players in Soo, Innovation, and Stats.

Soo, Innovation, and Stats play different races, helping balance the team and ensure they don’t have to deal with mismatches. All three are legends in StarCraft, while Scarlett is the best that Canada has to offer. Scarlett was instrumental in leading Canada this far, beating Taiwan singlehandedly to reach the final eight, but she will have a very hard time leading her country past South Korea.

Germany -500
France +351

Germany was the first country to show that China might be overhyped coming into this competition. The Germans beat the Chinese team in a thriller thanks to a stellar performance from Showtime, and they are seen as a much tougher team than France due to the teams they have beaten to get to this point.

The French are very dependent on Clem. The teenager is one of the next great StarCraft players, and he is coming into his own. In the future, he will be fantastic, but he is too unpolished at this point to expect him to lead the way.
