MSI 2018 Play-In Group A Betting Preview

eSports-Coverage-Article-One-5-4-bm

After the first day of Group A action, the favorite to come out of the group is in a hole. Rainbow7 was the odds-on favorite to emerge from this group heading into MSI, but the team is sitting at 1-2 and is in serious trouble. They need to win out and get some help from other teams in order to advance to the knockout round at this point.

Instead, Gambit Esports is in the driver’s seat. Gambit finished the day at 3-0 and looked the part of the favorite in all three of their matches. Kaos Latin Gamers are right behind them at 2-1, while Ascension Gaming looks out of it at 0-3.

MSI 2018 Play-In Group A Betting Odds

Gambit Esports -333
Ascension Gaming +250

For as good as Gambit looked on the first day of action, they had some trouble putting away Ascension in their first game on Thursday. It was a relatively even match for the first 30 minutes, and at the 33-minute mark it looked like Ascension was about to take control. They had successfully baited Baron and won the subsequent team fight, but then a mistake they made in the draft phase came back to bite them.

Ascension had left Kai’Sa open, and they ended up regretting that decision. She successfully won a 1v3 team fight and then Gambit took Baron themselves and broke open the game. Kai’Sa ended the game with 11 of Gambit’s 20 kills, carrying like she has so many times in the past.

With that in mind, Ascension has a chance to pull off the upset. They now know what everyone else does, Kai’Sa is a must ban. Ascension will not allow Gambit to draft the champion this time and that could be the difference.

Rainbow7 -250
Kaos Latin Gamers +175

Speaking of close games, the first match between Rainbow7 and Kaos Latin Gamers consistently swung back and forth. Junglers Oddie and Tierwulf kept dueling and traded blows in trying to set up plays for their team.

Around the 27-minute mark, KLG looked like it had a good set-up around Baron, but Oddie was able to get into the pit and nearly was able to smite the Baron away from the team. That might have been the beginning of the end for KLG as Rainbow7 won the subsequent team fight.

This time around, look for both teams to be a little more cautious, especially since a loss probably means the end for one of these two teams. The match was relatively even last time, so I like the underdog here.

Rainbow7 -115
Gambit Esports -115

This match might not mean anything at the end of the day, but many considered these two teams the favorites going into the group. In their first match, Gambit was able to surprise Rainbow7 in the draft by taking Nocturne and Karthus, and those two were able to turn what looked like a winning bottom lane of Caitlyn and Morgana against their opponent.

Seiya has been fantastic for Rainbow7 in the mid lane, but the team’s bottom lane has struggled. They have not had WhiteLotus available for the last six months due to a suspension from Riot, and their decision to use Leona at support backfired in their first two matches. It will be interesting to see how both teams adapt.

Kaos Latin Gamers -167
Ascension Gaming +125

I don’t get this line at all. While Ascension is not as bad as their 0-3 record suggests, KLG has looked strong so far. They have gotten some good play out of the jungle and mid lane is a strength too. Like every other team has done, they are target banning power champions away from Rockky and that means Ascension is not able to play the way they want to. My only concern is this match might not mean anything for KLG, so motivation could be an issue.
