LPL China 2018 Spring Split Finals Betting Preview

There are some things that are constant in life. Death, taxes, and seeing Edward Gaming in the LPL Final. EDG was not expected to get back to the final after a rough start to the season. However, the team endured and ended up rallying despite having superstar Clearlove in the final for only a handful of games.

Royal Never Give Up had a somewhat similar path to the finals. RNG and EDG are the two biggest brands in Chinese League of Legends, but RNG also had a sluggish start to the season. Their star player, Uzi, sat out for the first part of the year and only returned after Chinese New Year. Once he was back, the team turned it on and are now the favorites after defeating 18-1 Invictus Gaming last week.

League of Legends LPL China 2018 Spring Split Finals Betting Odds

Royal Never Give Up -175
Edward Gaming +150

It was much tougher or RNG to get to this point and they are now battle tested. Royal Never Give Up had to run the gauntlet in order to make the final. They were able to sweep Team World Elite in the first round and then survived a bit of a test from Snake Esports in the Quarterfinals. Last week, they were sizeable underdogs to knock off Invictus Gaming but ended up winning a thrilling five-game set.

The story to that RNG win was two-fold. Invictus foolishly refused to ban away Kai’Sa for the first three games of the series, allowing RNG to get out to a 2-1 lead. The OP champion was able to take games over late in Uzi’s hands, and it was a major factor in Invictus’ loss. Additionally, Uzi was able to outposition his counterpart in team fights. Invictus’ JackeyLove had a great Spring Split, but he made a few mistakes that allowed RNG to win the series.

Edward Gaming had a much simpler path to the final. They finished atop the weaker West Region, giving them a bye into the semifinals. There, they were matched up against Rogue Warriors, a team that had really struggled to close out the season. EDG had little trouble in dispatching them 3-1.

Kai’Sa

It’s going to be interesting to see whether or not Edward Gaming decides to ban out the champion. Against Rogue Warriors, they were content to let Smlz use the champion for the first two games. They banned the champion away after Smlz went 9-4-5 on her in Game 2 though, not wanting to deal with her late game power again. I would be stunned if they left it up after seeing its power, and they’ve now seen what Uzi can do on the champion.

Clearlove

Jungle has been one of the big concerns for EDG all year long. Clearlove is seen as one of the top junglers in the world, but he has sat out for nearly the entire year. He did return in the regular season finale, and he looked good when he subbed in for Haro in Game 4 of the semifinals, but we have not seen him over the course of a series yet. We’ll see whether or not that’s because EDG is looking to surprise us or there are concerns about chemistry this late in the year.

Prediction

I liked Royal Never Give Up earlier in the week when they were at -140, but the price has gone up since then. As long as EDG is smart and bans away Kai’Sa, I like EDG a little bit at this price. RNG lost the laning phase in four of their five games against Invictus and were only allowed back in because of Uzi’s play on Kai’Sa. I don’t think EDG will allow that to happen.
