League of Legends MSI Semifinals Betting Preview

eSports-Coverage-Article-One-bm-5-17-18

Fnatic and Flash Wolves will be looking to make history this week. The Mid-Season Invitational has always been won by teams from China or Korea, while the teams from Europe and Taiwan have fallen short.
Each team is a pretty big underdog heading into its MSI Semifinals match-up. Fnatic is the heavier underdog after going 4-6 in the group stage and needing a tiebreaker over Team Liquid to qualify, and Flash Wolves must face the team that was the odds-on favorite to win before the tournament started.

League of Legends MSI Semifinals Betting Odds

Royal Never Give Up -532
Fnatic +410

After finishing tied atop the Group Stage standings at 7-3, Royal Never Give Up and Flash Wolves squared off in a tiebreaker match to determine the No. 1 overall seed. Grabbing the top spot was crucial. The No. 1 seed is given the chance to pick its opponent in the semifinals and both sides wanted to play Fnatic rather than Kingzone.

RNG was able to get the win and quickly announced that they would indeed face Fnatic. RNG won both games against Fnatic at MSI and also defeated them in the quarterfinals at last year’s World Championships. They are supremely confident in their ability to beat the European champions.

Most of that confidence comes from the play of Uzi. Uzi has been a wrecking ball this tournament. Now that he has finally won a Chinese domestic title, he looks much more relaxed and is not making the mental errors he had in the past on this stage. Uzi has an 11.8 KDA, three full kills above Flash Wolves’ Betty for the highest at MSI, and he is farming better than every other AD Carry too. He is averaging an absurd 12 CS per minute through 10 games.

Rekkles has been playing well too. He has made a few mistakes, particularly in the laning phase, but his play on Sivir and Xayah has been very good. However, he has yet to outduel Uzi.

There is hope for Fnatic. They won the early game in both of their matches with RNG only to fall apart in the team fighting phase. Additionally, Caps has showed some incredible skill. He only has a 2.4 KDA, but he has showed us a new wrinkle with his Yasuo mid. It likely won’t be enough, but Fnatic does have a puncher’s chance if Caps performs well.

Kingzone DragonX -376
Flash Wolves +299

This line is a head scratcher if you have only tuned in for MSI. Flash Wolves dominated the first three days of the tournament and swept Kingzone in their two matches in the Group Stage. However, Kingzone was seen as the best team in the world coming into MSI and their ceiling is much higher than any other team’s.

Kingzone has not gotten good play out of most of its roster. Only BDD and Gorilla have played at a consistently high level, and Khan has especially struggled in the top lane. He has died in the laning phase way too often and is making some questionable decisions. If he doesn’t find his old form, Kingzone are vulnerable.

No one expected the Flash Wolves to look this good. They have gotten good play out of all five of their members, and top laner Hanabi has been particularly impressive in his first international tournament. He has outdueled some of the best top laners in the world and the team is trusting him to play carries. Additionally, Maple and Betty have taken a real step forward.

I figured that Kingzone would still be favored, but this price is surprising. You almost have to play Flash Wolves based off of Kingzone’s struggles.
