2018 Mid-Season Invitational Betting Preview

2018-eSports-Coverage-Betting-Odds

For the first time ever, perennial powerhouse SK Telecom T1 will not be taking part in the Mid-Season Invitational. SKT finished runner-up to Edward Gaming at the first MSI back in 2015 and won the event handily in both 2016 and 2017.

With Edward Gaming also failing to make it here, we will be crowning a new champion. Coming into the tournament, Kingzone DragonX are the heavy favorites. They were the best team in Korea all throughout the spring and few would argue that they are not the best team in the world. The winners of the other major leagues will look to shock the community and show that they are in fact the best around.

2018 Mid-Season Invitational Betting Odds

Kingzone DragonX -500 Royal Never Give Up +650
Fnatic +1000 EVOS eSports +1200
Team Liquid +2000 Flash Wolves +2500
Field +6000

It’s not often that you say a team that is -500 might be undervalued. It feels that way with Kingzone. Kingzone might just be the best team we have ever seen. Every player can carry and each one has also been able to take a back seat to a teammate too. That makes them incredibly tough to match up against as there are few apparent weaknesses.

Royal Never Give Up are the second favorite heading into this event. After years of coming up just short, Uzi finally won a domestic title and will be making his first appearance at MSI. He is arguably the best AD Carry in the world, and if RNG are going to win it will be through him. His mechanics are legendary and in this meta, the team at least has a shot.

Fnatic was clearly the best team in Europe throughout the spring. They were the one EU team that was able to keep their roster intact, and that led to them grabbing the top spot in the regular season. From there, they routed G2 to make it to MSI. Fnatic was not too impressive at Worlds last year and had to win a three-way tiebreaker to make it out of the group stage. They are more seasoned this time around and will have top laner Soaz back in the line-up after he missed the playoffs.

It was a little surprising to see EVOS as the fourth favorite to win MSI. EVOS was the top team in Vietnam this spring and their victory over GIGABYTE Marines left many thinking they have a chance to make some noise. Stark has continued to grow as a top laner and Slay shouldn’t be overlooked despite being in a tournament with so many quality AD Carries.

Speaking of AD Carries, Doublelift is back on the international scene. He put on an incredible performance at the North American finals and led Team Liquid back to the top. Each member of this team has experience at a major international tournament, but this will be their first major competition together. There might be some value in them at 20-1 though.

Flash Wolves continue to rule the League of Legends scene in Taiwan, but this team is not as strong as it was in years past. Losing Karsa to RNG really hurt and they have not looked impressive in their last two international appearances. SwordArt is a legend in the Support role, but his bottom lane partner Betty can get a bit too greedy at times.

The field option may be enticing given the long odds, but none of the eight teams playing in the group stage have a realistic shot to even make the semifinals. The two best squads are Rainbow7 and BAU SuperMassive and neither one has been able to do anything against the best teams in the world in the past.
