2018 League of Legends LPL Summer Split Betting Preview

2018 eSports Coverage Article One preview

Even though, they have won everything there is to win at this point, Royal Never Give Up are not the favorites to win the LPL Summer Split. Instead, that honor goes to Invictus Gaming. Invictus was the most dominant team in China during the Spring Split regular season. They lost just one match during the regular season and were heavy favorites to win in the playoffs.

However, a funny thing happened on the way to their coronation. Invictus couldn’t get past RNG in the playoffs, stunningly losing in five games. Invictus blew early leads in two of the first four games and RNG was able to wallop a clearly stunned team in the decisive fifth game. RNG went on to win the Spring Playoffs, with Uzi finally winning earning a crown.

Fans of Invictus will tell you that they would have won the Spring Split Playoffs if they were fully healthy. Top laner TheShy suffered a hand injury prior to the start of the postseason and was unable to play against RNG. His substitute Duke performed well, but Duke could only play one style and the team was not as multi-faceted as it was with TheShy in the lineup.

However, the real problem for Invictus was the play of young AD Carry JackeyLove. JackeyLove had a great regular season and established himself as a future star, but he made several misplays in the postseason, allowing RNG to get back into the games. Invictus has the best mid laner in China in Rookie and is talented across the board, but it’s hard to back them at these odds until JackeyLove proves he can rise to the occasion in the playoffs.

Seeing Royal Never Give Up at these odds is a bit puzzling, and honestly somewhat insulting. RNG proved that it was the best team in the world by knocking off Korean champions Kingzone DragonX at the Mid-Season Invitational, and they followed that up by winning the Demacia Cup without superstar AD Carry Uzi.

Mid laner xiaohu continues to look fantastic in certain situations, and jungler Karsa is finally starting to mesh well with the team. Karsa’s play was instrumental in winning MSI and the Demacia Cup, and he has proven to be a better team player than mlxg. That makes RNG a decent bet to win the LPL Spring Split.

Edward Gaming is considered somewhat of a longshot, but you can’t sleep on this team. EDG finished runners-up to RNG in the spring and will be even better with Clearlove having a full season of practice under his belt. The key will be the play of mid laner Scout. He is talented, but he is too aggressive for his good at times. Scout chases kills when he shouldn’t and that can lead to him losing lane pressure. He will need to fix that.

Team WE is coming off of a rough spring. Jungler Condi was going through personal issues after the death of a love and barely played, and Zero did not look good at support. Now, Zero is the team’s new coach, and with Condi back Team WE is looking to make noise in summer.
