Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs Anderson Silva Preview

The son of Julio Cesar Chavez was always going to follow in his father’s footsteps. The junior Chavez stepped into the ring for his first professional fight before he was 18 years old, and he was 42-0-1 almost eight years into his career.

Chavez took on Sebastian Zbik in June 2011 with the WBC middleweight title on the line. It was his first major title fight, and he took advantage of his first chance by winning a majority decision to claim the belt. He defended that title against Peter Manfredo Jr., Marco Antonio Rubio, and Andy Lee before he lost a unanimous decision to Sergio Martinez.

He hasn’t been able to reclaim a major title since that defeat. Chavez beat Brian Vera twice at super middleweight, but he lost by ninth round TKO to Andrzej Fonfara with a title shot on the line. He was convincingly defeated by Canelo Alvarez on Cinco de Mayo weekend four years ago, and Chavez has lost two of his last three fights.

Anderson Silva is one of the greatest fighters in the history of the UFC. Many analysts consider him the greatest champion in the promotion’s history as he held the middleweight title for six-and-a-half years. Silva successfully defended the belt 13 times in that stretch.

He has not been the same since losing the title though. Silva is no longer with the UFC, as he won just one time in his last nine fights. The brutal leg injury that he suffered in his second fight with Chris Weidman took away some of his explosiveness, and age has also taken its toll.

Silva’s ability to stand and trade in the Octagon makes him an intriguing opponent. He had plenty of power in his appendages ten years ago, and he might fare well considering he doesn’t have to worry about takedowns or putting too much pressure on his legs.

The MMA specialist has two advantages working for him. Silva will be 30 pounds heavier than Chavez, and his reach is a whopping five inches longer even though he is just an inch taller than his opponent.
