Gervonta Davis vs. Abner Mares - Boxing Lines

Gervonta Davis was labeled by the great Floyd Mayweather Jr. as the “future of boxing” and that moniker is getting easier to understand. Mayweather saw in Davis the ability to dominate like few other boxers in recent memory. Davis has never lost a fight in his career and at the age of 24 he is still just getting started with what looks to be a considerable amount of upside. On February 9 “Tank” will be facing battle tested veteran Abner Mares in defense of Davis’ World Boxing Association super world super featherweight title belt. Mares is a past champion in his own right with three different weight class titles during his career.

Gervonta Davis vs. Abner Mares Fight Preview

The upcoming WBA super world super featherweight title between Gervonta “Tank” Davis is Abner Mares is a matchup of convenience in many ways. For Davis his agenda was to post a win over a big name to pad his already impressive resume. For Mares it’s the opportunity to test himself against one of the best and to win a fourth championship belt in a different weight class. Unlike many championship fights there was not the usual haggling and hassles. This matchup was put together with relative ease.

Several years ago, as he was emerging as a world champion Gervonta Davis was tabbed by Floyd Mayweather Jr as “the future of boxing” and its easy to understand why “Money” had such a vision for the young prodigy. Davis has quickly emerged as one of boxing’s best, toughest, and most dynamic talents. One cloud in an otherwise bright future for Davis has been ongoing legal problems that have kept him out of the ring. There have also been some problems with Mayweather Promotions. But all of that has been dealt with and now Davis is ready to get his career back on track. The upcoming bout against Mares will be the biggest fight of Davis’ career. Davis and his camp believe that a win over Mares will generate considerable momentum going forward.

“I believe that Abner Mares is a future Hall of Famer because he’s fought so many top-level guys. This is big for me because this is my first time being a main event in the US and I just feel blessed to he here,” said Davis.

Davis continued saying “In 2019 I want to make a big statement not only in the ring but by letting the boxing world know that I’m the next star. I’m aiming to headline a pay per view by 2020 if everything goes right. I have great fights lined up for next year, without looking past Abner.”

As for Mares it’s all about the challenge. “We’re not just going into this fight blind,” said Mares. “All fights are tough. I’m taking this fight because I see something in this guy. I’m taking this fight because of the challenge that it brings. I’m all about that. He’s in for a good fight.”

Boxing Betting Tips

Certainly, Mares is respected for winning titles in three different weight classes but there is also the perception that he is past his prime. Counter to that is the belief that Davis is just getting started.
