Fight Preview

This HBO championship fight has the interesting story of two boxers that have pined for a shot at Stevenson before coming to the realization that they should simply settle things on their own. Eleider Alvarez has been particularly blunt in his assessment of being tired of hearing about Stevenson. “Storm” is thrilled at the opportunity to fight for the world light heavyweight title against the man he considers to be the best of all in that division right now.

Alvarez has voiced how happy he is to have this career opportunity. He admits that he expects a hard fight but also clearly states that this matchup is his dream come true. “Storm” says that as a boxer he wants the ultimate challenge and in fighting Kovalev on HBO for the light heavyweight title his vision will be realized.

Kovalev has been even more colorful labeling Stevenson as “Chickenson.” Kovalev’s charge that Stevenson has dodged both him and Alvarez would appear to have at least some merit to it. Kovalev says he respects Alvarez for immediately accepting the challenge of this world light heavyweight championship fight.

After a lot of haggling with different names being floated the Kovalev vs. Alvarez bout was finally put together. Most chalk it up simply to the politics of the sport. Kovalev was touted by his manager Egis Klimas as being willing to fight anyone, anytime, anyplace and said that Stevenson was too scared to step into the ring against “Krusher.” Klimas praised Alvarez of being worthy of this HBO title fight opportunity. Both Kovalev and Alvarez grew tired of waiting on Stevenson. They both became anxious over all of the wasted idle time.

Alvarez has a career record of 23-0 with a total of 11 knockout wins. The native of Colombia now resides in Montreal.

Kovalev is 32-2-1 and has posted 28 career knockout wins for his career. The Russian native now resides in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and is the WBO light heavyweight champ.
