Gassiev is coming off a technical knockout win over Yunier Dorticos on February 3, 2018 at Bolshoy Ice Dome in Adler. The TKO took place in the 12th round of a scheduled 12 round bout as Dorticos went down twice in the 12th round at the 1:42 and 2:05 marks. With the win Gassiev took home the International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Association Super World Cruiserweight titles.
On October 21, 2017 Gassiev scored a third round knockout win over Krzysztof Wlodarczyk at Prudential Center in Newark. The fight was scheduled for 12 rounds and was for the International Boxing Federation World Cruiserweight title.
Oleksandr Usyk is 31 years of age and is a native of Ukraine where he still resides in Kiev. He fights from a southpaw stance. Usyk is coming off a 12 round majority decision win over Mairis Briedis at Arena Riga, Riga on January 27, 2018. With the win Usyk took home the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Organization World Cruiserweight titles.
On September 9, 2017 Usyk scored a technical knockout win over Marco Huck at the Max Schmeling Halle in Prenzlauer Berg. The bout was scheduled for 12 rounds but ended in the tenth. Usyk took home the World Boxing Organization World Cruiserweight title belt.
Usyk and Gassiev were originally supposed to meet last May in Saudi Arabia but had to be postponed due to an injury to Usyk. There was a lot of speculation about this fight not being able to be arranged if it was held in Gassiev’s native Russia. England was often mentioned as a potential site but promoters felt that they would get a far better draw in Russia.
Gassiev has tried to play down what many believe is an advantage for him by fighting on his native soil. Usyk stated that he didn’t care where the fight was and that he would even travel to and through Antarctica to meet Gassiev for the unification title. Usyk is a past Olympic gold medal winner that clearly stated he not only wanted this bout but also wanted Gassiev specifically.
Gassiev has said this is the biggest fight of his career and that he has always dreamed of winning a unification title.
