DAZN will present the championship fight of the vacant World Boxing Council world cruiserweight title between Krzysztof Glowacki (31-1, 19 knockouts) and Mairis Briedis (25-1, 18 knockouts). This bout is scheduled for 12 rounds and will take place at Arena Riga, Riga.
Fight Preview
Maris Briedis is ranked second in the world compared to Krzysztof Glowacki and his fourth in the world ranking. Briedis is riding a two-bout winning streak since his loss for Oleksandr Usyk for the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Organization world cruiserweight titles.
Maris Briedis has been working with trainer Vasily Chernigov in preparation for this championship fight against Krzysztof Glowacki, who is renowned and respected as a very heavy hitter and tough as nails.
By all accounts the favored Briedis has to show far better than his last fight in order to have a legitimate shot at defeating Glowacki. In his quarterfinal fight against Noel Mikaelian, Briedis socred a highly controversial 12 round unanimous decision win last November at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago. Many fight fans saw the German based Mikaelian as the actual winner. Indeed, Briedis was out boxed much of the fight but the judges did not see it that way.
The irony of all of this is that the last time Briedis looked sharp it was in the only defeat of his professional career when he lost a 12 round majority decision to Oleksandr Usyk. That of course leads to the question as to why he is so heavily favored for this bout with Glowacki.
Glowacki is coming off a 12 round unanimous decision win over Maksim Vlasov last November, also in Chicago. It was a close decision for a bout in which Glowacki had Vlasov hurting late in the fight but was unable to put him away. As it turned out Glowacki did not mix up his punching enough and Vlasov was able to defend effectively as a result.
“I am really looking forward to another chance to get to the final,” said Briedis. “In front of my people in a fight watched by the world, I will do my best to make Latvia proud. I have always been going step by step in my career and my next step is the semifinal bout against Glowacki which is the only thing I’m thinking of right now”
Briedis has been pleased with his training heading into this bout. “I am trying to do what my trainers are asking from me. We are working on our prepared plan and thus far everything has been good and I myself feel better and better for every single day.”
As far as his opinion of Glowacki. Briedis remarked, “He is a very good boxer with a very heavy punch.”
As for Glowacki, he said simply “Mairis prepare for war. Glowka is coming!”
