Leo Santa Cruz (35-1-1, 19 knockouts)

In his last five fights, Santa Cruz is 4-1. He defeated Rafael Rivera by unanimous decision in February, defeated Abner Mares by unanimous decision in June of last year, defeated Chris Avalos by 8th round knockout in October of 2017, defeated Carl Frampton by majority decision in January of 2017 and lost to Frampton by majority decision in July of 2016.

Santa Cruz said to the media that Flores is a lot better than people think. “The fans are going to be happy, and they’re going to realize that Miguel is a lot better than they think. He’s a good fighter that comes and fights. It’s going to be a great fight.” Santa Cruz said that he is not going to underestimate Flores. “Miguel Flores is a tough fighter and I don’t underestimate him. I know it’s going to be a hard fight. He’s going to come with everything he has. It’s the opportunity of his lifetime. I’m really motivated like this is my first world title. This is something big for me. It will help me be remembered as one of the best Mexican fighters and that’s my goal.”

Miguel Flores (24-2, 12 knockouts)

In his last five fights, Flores is 3-2. He won by TKO over Luis May in June of this year. He won by TKO against Raul Chirino in April of last year, he lost to Chris Avalos by RTD in July of 2017, lost by TKO to Dat Nguyen in February of 2017 and won a unanimous decision against Ryan Kielczweski in August of 2016.

Flores said he has been preparing for Santa Cruz for a long time. “Leo is one of the top featherweights, super featherweights, out there,” said Flores to the media, “There’s no secret to him either: He likes to throw a lot of punches. He loves to fight. If you catch him with one good shot, he likes to come back right away and get that shot back. The plan is just to make it easy, but if it comes down to a brawl, I’m up for that too. I love a good action fight.”

Boxing Picks

There is little doubt that Santa Cruz is going to be listed as the favorite in this fight, as he comes in with a better record and a better overall resume. Flores is a good fighter, but this looks like it is a step up in competition for him. I am still leery of laying a big price on Santa Cruz simply because I think this will be a competitive fight. so I think the best choice is to play the rounds. These two fighters have decent power, but neither of them is known as a knockout boxer. I think this fight goes the distance, so I will take the rounds to go over the total.
