Linares has previously held the World Boxing Association and Ring Magazine Lightweight titles since 2016 and has a total of four world championships in three different weight classes for his career. He has also held the World Boxing Council Featherweight title from 2007 to 2008 and was the World Boxing Association Super Featherweight champion from 2008 to 2009. From 2014 to 2016 Linares was World Boxing Council Lightweight champion. As recently as February 2018 Linares was ranked as the best active lightweight in the world by Ring Magazine and BoxRec. He ranks second with the Transnational Boxing Rankings Boards.

Vasyl Lomachenko is 30 years of age and has a career record of 10-1 with eight career knockout wins. He has never suffered a knockout loss. Lomachenko is ranked first in the world. He is a defending champion in his own right having won the World Boxing Organization World Super Featherweight title. Lomachenko also has held the World Boxing Organization Featherweight title from 2014 to 2016 and captured that title belt in just his third professional fight. Known as “Hi-Tech” he stands at five feet, seven inches tall with a reach of 65 ½ inches and fights from an orthodox stance. Lomachenko is a native of Ukraine but now resides in Oxnard California.

Ring Magazine named Lomachenko as its Prospect of the Year in 2013 while CBS Sports named him Boxer of the Year in 2016. HBO has twice named him Boxer of the Year in 2016 and 2017 while the Boxing Writers Association of America and The Ring named him 2017 Fighter of the Year.
