Whatever can be said about Donnie Nietes it certainly cannot possibly or adequately be enough. Starting with the fact that he has won three world title belts in three difference weight classes and has fought and won against some of the biggest names in boxing. But now Nietes faces the unique challenge of an all Filipino fight on September 8, 2018 when he steps into the ring against fellow countryman Aston Palicte for the World Boxing Organization World Super Flyweight title. While Palicte has a great record, it has not been built up against top shelf competition the likes of which Nietes is used to facing. Yet with that comes the element of the unknown and the fact that this will be the biggest fight and opportunity of Palicte’s career.

The bout between Donnie Nietes and Aston Palicte will take place on September 8, 2018 at the Forum in Inglewood, California. The fight will be aired on HBO and is scheduled for 12 rounds. The winner will get the World Boxing Organization World Super Flyweight title belt.

Fight Preview

Donny Nietes has a career record of 41-4-4 with a total of 23 knockouts and has not lost a fight since 2004. He has won world championships at strawweight, junior flyweight, and flyweight. He made four title defenses as a strawweight with nine title defenses as a junior flyweight and has defended his flyweight crown one time. Nietes is the Philippines most decorated fighter other than the famed Many Pacquiao over the past decade. All-Filipino title bouts are extremely rare which adds to the intrigue of the matchup. In fact, it has been almost 100 years since the last time it ever happened.

Nietes decided to move up in weight class for this title bout after a flyweight title defense bout against Juan Carlos Reveco on February 24, also at the Forum in Inglewood. In that bout Nieves scored a highly one-sided win by knockout in the seventh round. Reveco was a former champion in his own right. With a win Nietes will further add to his distinctive career of having four different title belt championships.

An interesting angle to this bout is the fact that Nietes has stated that he is out for revenge for his cousin Gerald Nietes. The reason being is that Palicte defeated Gerald Nietes back in their amateur days years ago. However, when one gets past the vows of revenge it remains the elusive fourth title bout that is most likely motivating Nietes.

One factor that has some handicappers concerned is the much larger size of Aston Palicte, who is five inches taller than Nietes. Additionally, Palicte is nine years younger than Nietes. So, despite the hype that the champ is getting there are some bargain hunters thinking that the capability of an upset is definitely on hand.

Meanwhile Nietes has said that a positive attitude and humility have been the ticket to his success. It may be hard to stay humble for the longest reigning Filipino world champion but it does seem as if Nietes is staying true to his word. Nietes has also commented on the demands of a championship athlete and the grind that it takes to maintain the ability to win title belts. He surrounds himself with friends and family that will keep him straight and working hard. Nietes also noted many fighters use boxing as a way to a far better life than from where they came.
