Central Division Odds And Preview

Central Division Odds And Preview

There are some NBA divisions that figure to come down to the wire in 2019-20, but the Central Division is not one of them. The Milwaukee Bucks finished with the best record in the NBA a year ago and have all the makings of a contender once again. The team plays in a division that is light on serious contenders, as the Indiana Pacers may be the only one that has a very slight chance of competing in the Central Division. Milwaukee has much bigger goals this season but the first step will be wrapping up another Central Division title, and it would be a shock if another team in the division finished with a better record than them this season. The current NBA odds reflect it as Milwaukee is the heavy favorite to claim the Central.

Central Division Odds Analysis

The Bucks won 60 games last year and advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals, but their run ended there in a loss to the eventual champion Toronto Raptors. Milwaukee has nearly everyone of consequence back from that team, including reigning league MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, who seems set to have another big-time year. The Bucks boast another All-Star in Khris Middleton, as well as Eric Bledsoe and twin big men Robin and Brook Lopez. Milwaukee doesn’t just have the Greek Freak but plenty of other talented players, so even if an injury or two hits the Bucks should be able to overcome them.

The one team that has an outside chance of remaining competitive with Milwaukee this season seems to be the Indiana Pacers. They put together a pretty solid campaign a year ago and that was despite the fact that star Victor Oladipo was out for a significant stretch due to injury. He is back and looking to lead the way, while the Pacers also return Myles Turner and Damontas Sabonis, among others. Indiana brought in former Bucks guard Malcolm Brogdon as well as T.J. Warren this offseason to add to an already-solid group.

The Detroit Pistons are the next-best team in the division and will aim for a playoff spot but don’t seem to have much chance to stick with the Bucks in the Central. Detroit has a nice frontcourt duo of Blake Griffin and Andre Drummond, but there is not enough talent around them to truly hang around in the race in the Central. The Pistons hung around .500 last season and figure to be in that range once again in 2019-20.

The Chicago Bulls and Cleveland Cavaliers round out the division. They were cellar dwellers last season and it doesn’t seem like that will be changing this year. Sure, the odds would result in a great payout if they somehow became contenders in the division, but there is virtually no chance of that happening.

The Bucks are heavy favorites to win the division, and it’s hard to see a path for others to beat them out unless calamity hits the Milwaukee roster. The Bucks could very well push for an Eastern Conference title this season, and a Central Division title seems like fait accompli. The odds aren’t going to result in a very good payout but there is little reason to choose an underdog from this division with such little chance of that wager paying out.
