Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees MLB Betting

ESPN’s first Sunday Night Baseball telecast of the 2022 MLB betting season pits the Boston Red Sox up against the New York Yankees in the finale of the hated rival’s three-game set in the Bronx. With Mother Nature already postponing Thursday’s Opening Day matchup, the pitching match-ups are unknown at the time of this writing. From what I’ve been able to dig up, it looks like Tanner Houck will toe the bump for the BoSox while the Pinstripes will roll with Luis Severino who will be making his first big league start since 2019. As such, the betting odds are likely to have the host Yankees installed short to mid-range favorites with the total between 8-9 runs. I attached my wagon to Houck numerous times a season ago, and will elect to go that route in the Sunday nighter should it actually be confirmed that he gets the starting nod in the finale. I’m extremely high on this kid and you should be too!

First pitch for the game between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees is scheduled for Sunday, April 10, 2022, at 7 p.m. ET from Yankee Stadium. This week’s Sunday Night Baseball telecast will air live on ESPN. Bet on MLB odds and player props at BookMaker.eu every day of the season.

Odds Analysis

Boston won last year’s regular season rivalry 10-9 with four of those triumphs coming in Yankee Stadium. Most importantly, Alex Cora’s troops came up with the huge 6-2 win in the AL play-in game that sent the Bronx Bombers home for the winter. New York came out on top the six times it hosted this rivalry with the under cashing in six times. The Red Sox were a solid moneymaker for MLB bettors in 2021 in going 92-70 overall $771, and proved to be a decent team away from Fenway Park where it played five-games over the breakeven point $503. The Yankees finished the year 22 games over .500, but still ended up with a negative return on investment -$184. It posted identical records both at home and on the road 46-35, but made $391 as visitors and dropped $575 as hosts.

Probable Pitchers

Tanner Houck R: I’m excited to see what lies ahead for Houck now that he’s locked down a role in the starting rotation every fifth day. Even though he was moved up and down between the minors and majors last season, Houck still managed to pitch to a 3.52 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and averaged 11.3 strikeouts per nine innings. All this at the ripe young age of 25! The kid was tough to hit evidenced by allowing just 7.4 hits per nine innings as well as 0.5 home runs per nine. Walks proved to be an issue 2.7/9 which played a part in his 1-5 overall record. He held his own versus Aaron Judge and company last season going 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA and .170 BAA while only allowing eight hits and 4 ER through 13.1 innings. He logged a 16:7 K/BB ratio.

Luis Severino R: The Yankees thought they had a gem in Severino back in 2018 and 2019 when he logged double-digit win tallies and went to a pair of All-Star games while getting some votes for MVP. Then the UCL in his throwing arm gave way and he went under the knife for Tommy John surgery. It’s been a long road back for the talented, young right-hander, but he looks to be almost back to peak form if his ascension throughout spring training tells us anything. His final tune-up saw him toss 57 pitches of shutout ball against the Atlanta Braves serving up one hit and striking out three. Severino stands 5-6 with a 3.89 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and .425 BAA over 12 starts and 74 innings lifetime against Boston.

Red Sox vs. Yankees Prediction

Hopefully the weather cooperates and this game gets in; it’d be nice to close another long work week out with the first SNB telecast of the season. Regardless, I’ll be backing the BoSox in this one at any underdog price and will also be looking to target Houck’s K prop should it clock in at 5.5 or 6; preferably the former. I’m very interested to see how the books deal with him early in the season as nasty his stuff proved to be last year. It’s been stated by Yankees management that Severino will be capped at around 75-80 pitches in his 2022 debut. I personally don’t think Xander Bogaerts and Co. allow him to get that high! I’m expecting an early hook and for the BoSox to take the finale in commanding fashion.
