Ottawa Senators 2024 Stanley Cup Odds

Founded in 1992-93, the Ottawa Senators have one appearance in the Stanley Cup Final and two appearances in the Conference Final. Ottawa has often been a franchise operating on a shoestring budget, as evidenced by the fact that their last playoff appearance was in 2017. The Sens have only one winning season since that last postseason campaign. However, Ottawa has new ownership led by Michael Staios, who claims to be committed to building a winner. If that vision is to be fulfilled, it is not likely going to be in 2023-24. As the All-Star Break approached, Ottawa was in the Eastern Conference basement.

At the approach of the All-Star Break, the Ottawa Senators are 18-24-2 straight up and 20-14-3 over/under the total. Also, Ottawa is 10th in the Eastern Conference wild card playoff standings. Ottawa is 17 points behind the Detroit Red Wings in the Eastern Conference wild card playoff race. Late on Ottawa has covered four out of their last seven games. While the Senators have gone over the total in six of its previous nine matchups. Ottawa has NHL rankings of 9th for goals scored and 24th for power play efficiency. In comparison on defense, the Senators have NHL rankings of 30th for goals against and 29th for penalty killing.

Ottawa’s status as one of the worst defensive teams in the NHL is something that will have to be addressed in the years to come. Until that is fixed, the prospect of making the playoffs is a pipe dream.

Ottawa Senators Key Players

In his first 38 games, C Tim Stutzle had a team-best 31 assists to go with seven goals. Stutzle’s NHL career began in 2020-21 with Ottawa. In 210 career games he has 73 goals and 104 assists. Stutzle was the third overall pick of the 2020 NHL Draft out of Germany.

LW Brady Tkachuk had a team-best 18 goals, along with 13 assists in his first 38 games. He was the 4th overall pick of the 2018 NHL Draft and has played his entire NHL career with Ottawa. In 359 career games, Tkachuk had 125 goals and 150 assists. Tkachuk will make his 4th All-Star game appearance this season.

D Jake Sanderson is in his second year in the NHL and with the Senators. Sanderson was named to the 2023 NHL All-Rookie. Sanderson is a good shut-down defenseman with playmaking ability and plenty of upside at age 21.

Ottawa Senators Goaltenders

Number one goaltender Joonas Korpisalo had a terrible .884 save percentage in the first half of the season. Korpisalo began his NHL career in 2015-16 with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Last year, Korpisalo played for the Los Angeles Kings. This is his first season with the Sens.

Backup Anton Forsberg was struggling as well, with a .889 save percentage in the season’s first half. Forsberg began his NHL career in 2015-15 with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He also played for the Chicago Blackhawks and Carolina Hurricanes.

Ottawa Senators Head Coach

Sadly, head coach DJ Smith was the fall guy for years of mismanagement in Ottawa. Smith was fired on December 18 and replaced by long-time veteran Jacques Martin, age 71. Martin’s first NHL job was in 1986-87 with the St. Louis Blues. This is his second stint as Ottawa's head coach, where he served in that capacity from 1995-2004. Martin’s last HC gig was in 2011-12 with the Montreal Canadiens. His career record is 613-481-119-81. Martin is serving in an interim role with Ottawa.

Ottawa Senators History

The Ottawa Senators were a 1992 expansion team that joined the league that year with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Ottawa has long had a reputation for being a low revenue and budget team that can’t afford superstars on the payroll. Ottawa made the 2007 Stanley Cup Final, losing to the Anaheim Ducks. It was their only appearance ever in the Final.

Ottawa has struggled to gain a foothold as a franchise with the masses. In Canada, the Toronto Maple Leafs are king, with the Montreal Canadiens also revered as the most successful franchise of all time. The Senators have also struggled on the ice with more lean years than not. And that has caused them revenue problems and low attendance.

At the beginning of their existence, the Senators used the old Ottawa Civic Center as a temporary home. The rink sat well under 10,000 fans, but the hockey-starved city didn’t care. Ottawa played there from 1992 through December 31, 1995.

Originally, the idea of building the new arena in a remote area far from downtown was seen as a developmental opportunity. Now it is seen as a disaster that almost cost Ottawa the franchise. Recently the team announced that they would move to a new downtown facility that is planned but not yet started. The team is expected to sign a new lease for the proposed facility soon, with groundbreaking to commence this year.
