Rene Alvarado vs Roger Gutierrez Preview

Alvarado hails from Nicaragua and began his career there, fighting in the capital of Managua. He won his first five fights by knockout within two rounds, and he claimed his country’s super bantamweight title in his night fight. However, he had a tough run after a 14-0 start.

From September 2011 to March 2017, Alvarado was 10-8 in fights. His losses to boxers like Yuriorkis Gamboa, Manuel Avila, and Joseph Diaz were respectable, but he fell to a lot of marginal boxers too. That seemed to bring about a reckoning for Alvarado though, and he has now won eight straight bouts.

His first big win during this recent run came over Gutierrez in July 2017. Alvarado secured a seventh-round knockout and then followed it up with a split decision win over IBF lightweight challenger Denis Shafikov. He claimed the WBA super featherweight belt over Andrew Cancio last November, beating Cancio in the seventh round.

Gutierrez ran his record to 15-0-1 before receiving his first test. Alvarado was the toughest boxer he had faced to that point, so it wasn’t a big surprise to see him lose by KO. He followed that up with four straight wins though, setting up a bout with unbeaten Hector Tanajara.

We saw Gutierrez lose a unanimous decision to Tanajara and he was dropped by unbeaten Oscar Duarte in his next fight. It appeared he would be stuck as a middling fighter that couldn’t get over the hump, but he secured a knockout over 17-1 Leonardo Padilla two years ago and followed that up with a knockout win against 28-0 Eduardo Hernandez. That set up this rematch with Alvarado for a strap.
