Current WBC super featherweight champion O’Shaquie Foster puts his belt on the line against once-defeated contender Eduardo Hernandez on Saturday, October 28. In his last bout Foster outpointed Rey Vargas to claim the strap and makes his first title defense having won his last 10 fights. While he is five years older than his opponent, Foster has 13 fewer professional fights on his resume and his list of opponents is stronger. Foster is positioned as a -195 favorite on the opening line.

In terms of raw power Hernandez might be one of the best in the ring today with 31 of his 34 victories coming by way of KO. Since his only loss back in 2019, “Rocky” has won six consecutive fights with the last five by stoppage and only one of those lasting longer than five rounds. Back in July he scored a third-round KO of Hector Garcia Montes to give him a shot at a title for the first time. Hernandez hit the board at +154 on the boxing betting line.

The 12-round WBC super featherweight title clash between O’Shaquie Foster ( 20-2, 11 KOs ) and Eduardo Hernandez ( 34-1, 31 KOs ) will take place at the Poliforum Benito Juarez in Cancun, Mexico, on Saturday, October 28, 2023 and will air on DAZN pay-per-view.

O’Shaquie Foster vs. Eduardo Hernandez Fight Preview

Though he has 13 fewer fights on his docket it’s safe to say Foster is the more experienced boxer. His bouts over the last few years have been more consequential and his opponents more main stream. In 2018 Foster scored a unanimous decision over unbeaten Jon Fernandez to claim the WBC Silver super featherweight championship.

The bout with Fernandez was a step up in competition after toiling in small arenas against questionable competition. And Foster showed the years of hard work and dedication paid off. Following a pair of victories, Foster earned a dominant unanimous decision over Alberto Mercado in his first title defense. In his second title defense 11 months later, Foster KO’d Miguel Roman in the ninth round of a scheduled 10 round fight.

One reason why Foster is one of the best at age 35 is that he takes enough time off between fights allowing him to remain healthy and fresh. That’s not always a good game plan for some boxers who need to be in the ring constantly to stay sharp. Foster has experienced plenty during his career and at this stage he knows what he can and can’t handle.

That was evident when he took 16 months to hop back in the ring after dispatching Roman. And Foster was sharp earning a UD win over No. 2 ranked contender Muhammadkhuja Yaqubov in March 2022. Foster had the only knockdown sending his opponent to the canvas with an overhand left in the 12th and final round.

You have to start somewhere and Hernandez has certainly paid his dues leaving bodies lying on the canvas in his march to his first title fight. Few fighters can match his power with a KO/win ratio of 91 percent. And while Rocky has more fights under his belt those matches lasted a lot fewer rounds, so you could say Hernandez is the fresher fighter.

Starting his career at age 16, Hernandez won his first 28 pro fights with only three going to the judges. And ironically he was floored by Roger Gutierrez in the first round of his only loss in July 2019.

Looking at the records and results can give you insight on fighters. But there are a lot of unknowns when it comes to Hernandez. The numbers suggest he has a big power advantage but the list of victims isn’t a who’s who in the boxing world. With title fights and belts, along with stiffer competition and still winning 20 of 22 fights, signs point to the favorite winning the bout. However, the odds are much tighter than I expected meaning oddsmakers possibly have some insight. This could be a tougher than expected match for Foster, but in the end the champ will prevail.
