Luis Ortiz vs Charles Martin Preview

This might be the last big fight for Luis Ortiz. The Cuban nicknamed King Kong will turn 43 in three months, and this will be just his fourth fight in the last three years. Ortiz has been very competitive throughout his career though, as his only losses have come against Deontay Wilder.

The punching power of Ortiz has been something to behold throughout his career. Cuban boxers are usually known for their precision and technique, but Ortiz has largely overwhelmed his opponents with pure strength since turning pro after defecting in 2010.

Ortiz won his first 21 fights to set up a title shot against Lateef Kayode. He secured a knockout just before the bell ending the first round, but he had to surrender the belt following a failed drug test. A little more than a year later, Ortiz was able to claim the WBA interim heavyweight belt though with a third round knockout of Matias Ariel Vidondo. He defended the belt with a seventh round TKO over Bryant Jennings, and he ran his record to 28-0 before his title shot against Wilder.

His best victory has come against former heavyweight champion Christian Hammer. That was one of the few foes that Ortiz couldn’t knock out, but he scored a unanimous decision victory over him. Ortiz knocked out Alexander Flores in the first round in his last fight in November 2020, but there could be stamina issues considering his next most recent bout was in November 2019.

Charles Martin had one of the shortest title reigns in modern history. Martin was 22-0-1 before taking on Vyacheslav Glazkov for the IBF heavyweight belt in January 2016, and he secured a third-round TKO to claim the strap. Unfortunately, he was utterly dominated by Anthony Joshua less than three months later, suffering a second-round knockout and has yet to receive another title shot.

Martin made quick work of Byron Polley and Mike Marrone in his next two bouts, winning both by knockout within two rounds. He lost a unanimous decision to Adam Kownacki in his next fight though, knocking him down the pecking order in the heavyweight division. Martin has looked to climb the ladder again by securing three wins in his last three fights, but this will be his first time entering the ring in almost two years.

The tale of the tape favors Martin. He is seven years younger than Ortiz, and he has an extra inch in height and an extra two inches in reach. Martin is also 15 pounds heavier than his opponent.
