Jose Ramirez vs Josh Taylor Preview

Maybe we should have known Jose Ramirez would be something special given his first fight. The two-time junior Olympics champion made his professional debut on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao’s fourth fight with Juan Manuel Marquez. He scored a first-round TKO and ended up recording the same result in four of his first five bouts.

Ramirez continued to make quick work of his opponents, and he won the WBC Continental Americas light welterweight belt against Johnny Garcia in December 2015. He defended the title against Manuel Perez on the undercard of another Pacquiao fight and proceeded to retain that belt three more times prior to his first major title shot.

In March 2018, Ramirez defeated Amir Imam for the WBC super lightweight title. He secured a unanimous decision victory over Imam and then followed that up with a convincing unanimous decision win over Antonio Orozco in his first defense. Jose Zepeda nearly beat him on the cards a short time later, so Ramirez had to settle for a majority decision.

His next fight against Maurice Hooker was more convincing. Hooker was the WBO super lightweight champion, but he was stopped in the sixth round by Ramirez. However, Viktor Postol gave Ramirez all he could handle in his most recent bout. Ramirez won a majority decision to retain both belts, as Postol kept him at bay with his reach.

Josh Taylor is a former Commonwealth Games champion. He won gold in his native Scotland at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and he turned professional the following year.

Taylor dominated his first several opponents, securing first or second round knockouts in his first six fights. Dave Ryan was his first real challenge, but Taylor overcame him to win the Commonwealth super lightweight belt. He proceeded to defend the strap against Warren Joubert before taking down Ohara Davies to win the WBC Silver super lightweight title.

We saw Taylor defend that title four times, and his third title defense was a dominant unanimous decision win over Postol. Taylor then secured a seventh round TKO victory over Ryan Martin in the quarterfinals of the World Boxing Super Series super lightweight division. He won the IBF super lightweight strap with a unanimous decision win over Ivan Baranchyk in the semifinals and claimed the WBA and The Ring super lightweight belts with his majority decision win over Regis Prograis in the final.

The last time Taylor entered the ring, he made quick work of Apinun Khongsong. He defeated Khongsong by a first-round knockout due to a well-placed body shot that sent his opponent crumbling to the canvas.
