Millions tuned in to see Shakur Stevenson defend his title last Tuesday, and the return of boxing has been met with excitement. Its comeback has sports fans optimistic that things are slowly returning to a degree of normalcy, and the Sweet Science is taking advantage of its new priority with multiple cards televised on ESPN in each of the coming weeks. The headline bout for Thursday’s card will see Jose Pedraza take on Mikkel LesPierre in a bout between two of the top super lightweights in the game.

Jose Pedraza vs Mikkel LesPierre Preview
After a decorated amateur career, Jose Pedraza 26-3 with 13 knockouts turned pro in March 2011. By the end of the year, he had won his first belt, claiming the vacant WBC Youth super featherweight title with a fifth-round knockout of Herbert Quartey, and he kept rising up the list of contenders. Pedraza claimed the IBO super featherweight strap in March 2014 with a unanimous division victory over Alberto Garza, and he ran his record to 19-0 before facing Andrey Klimov for the IBF junior lightweight championship in June 2015.
Pedraza won a unanimous decision over Klimov and he successfully defended that title twice against Edner Cherry and Stephen Smith before suffering a seventh-round TKO defeat at the hands of three-time champion Gervonta Davis. That didn’t keep him down for long, and he bounced back with victories over Jose Luis Rodriguez and Antonio Moran to earn a title shot against Raymundo Beltran, and he beat Beltran for the WBO lightweight title.
Unfortunately, he lost the belt in his very next fight. Pedraza was no match for Vasyl Lomachenko, but that’s nothing to be ashamed of as Lomachenko is ranked the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world. He responded with a TKO win over Antonio Lozada Jr. last May before losing a decision to Jose Zepeda in September.
LesPierre comes into this fight with a 22-1-1 record and 10 of his victories have come by knockout. He turned pro in June 2012, but it has taken him longer to make a name for himself in this decision as he struggled with lower tier fighters early in his career.
His first big break came in December 2017 when he knocked out Mario Beltre for the WBC FECARBOX Super Lightweight title. After that victory, he won a unanimous decision over the undefeated Noel Murphy, and that was followed up with an impressive win over Gustavo David Vittori.
Those wins earned him a shot at the WBO Super Lightweight title against Mauricio Hooker, but LesPierre lost a unanimous decision to the undefeated Hooker. This will be a chance to get his career back on track.
