John Ryder vs Canelo Alvarez Boxing Betting

The great Canelo Alvarez will step back into the ring for another Cinco de Mayo spectacle next weekend. Alvarez (58-2-2 with 39 knockouts) has turned the holiday into a boxing extravaganza, as his fans have shown tremendous support for the four-division world champion during these events. His opponent this time will be John Ryder who is seen as a massive underdog per the boxing betting odds. Ryder (32-5 with 18 knockouts) is a two-time interim super middleweight champion, and this will be his second shot at becoming the full-time champion. He failed to beat Callum Smith in November 2019, but he is hoping for a different outcome this time.

John Ryder vs Canelo Alvarez Preview

We could drone on and on about Canelo Alvarez given his resume, but this is a short preview so we will keep it brief. Alvarez is the second-best fighter of the 21st Century, and he only ranks behind Floyd Mayweather Jr. in that department. He is a four-division world champion with wins over other elite fighters like Gennady Golovkin, Sergey Kovalev, Callum Smith, and Caleb Plant over the last five years. Unlike other boxers that only get in the ring once a year, Alvarez is not afraid to step into the ring multiple times in a calendar year, and that has made him a beloved figure.

His only two losses have come against Mayweather (when he was still somewhat raw) and Dmitry Bivol. Alvarez found it difficult to move back up to light heavyweight to face someone as talented as Bivol last year, and he didn’t make the same mistake this time. Ryder is an opponent that Alvarez should be able to control, and this fight is at his natural fighting weight.

There are a couple reasons to think Ryder might pull off the improbable upset though. First and foremost, he will have the size and reach advantage. Ryder is a half-inch taller than Canelo, and he has a 72-inch reach compared to a 70.5-inch reach for Alvarez. Additionally, there is the real concern of how much punishment Canelo can take now that he is in his 30s. This will be his 63rd fight, and that has to start taking a toll at some point.

Ryder will remain a big underdog though because he has yet to beat anyone of note. He lost decisions to two fighters Alvarez easily defeated in Callum Smith and Rocky Fielding, and he has five losses to his name. His lack of knockout power is a concern too as that means it’s doubtful he will be able to punish Canelo when his opponent challenges him inside.

Due to the odds, Ryder is worth some consideration, but that’s it. Alvarez is just too good and will take care of the challenger.
